Newer cars use modular door latch/actuator assemblies with the motor+gears and electronics built-in. I recently replaced the front-right door latch because the actuator motor no longer produces enough force to engage/disengage the lock. This is on a 07 Honda Civic.

I did this DIY using a replacement module I bought from eBay.

This is the defective door latch/actuator assembly.

On a pal's civic, we fitted a universal actuator. Para madali na din palitan in the future. Plus, we use the other actuators on the other vehicles. Hehe

Not easy to do in my case. The newer Hondas, as well as others, use cable-type linkages so there's no way to attach a universal actuator without extensive modifications.

If the vehicle use push-pull metal rod linkages to operate the locks, a universal actuator can be used as there's a place for it to anchor to.
