"that idiot lamp is really an idiot". happened to me too.. the alternator is already overcharging but the lamp doesn't glow. good thing i sensed that the idle is hunting a bit.

Below those ranges would indicate charging system problems, not always an alternator problem. Most often culprit is loose or corroded terminal connection at bat or alternator, loose drive belt or loose circuitry ground connection, busted (dashboard) Bat Charge light bulb. Eliminate these possibilities and if nothing can be found wrong, start to suspect alternator.
Trick is, Alternator problems are costly and shops would always make you believe IT is the problem only to find out in the end the culprit is a loose connection. Waaaaahhhhh

Disclaimer: VOM ranges may vary depending on ambient temp and engine hood temp, but should not be far from those stated above. Bat reading below 12v is a weak battery
    good day!,

thanks for the tip. mine is charging at 15V. sabi sa akin sa isang electical shop, need to check alternator daw nasa 3k yung repair pero depende pa sa sira. palagi bang IC ang sira ng alternator? if 3k, might as well get a surplus na.

BTW, i have a new battery, walang problem sa pag start until lately, may times na ayaw mag start. walang clicking sound at nag re-reset ang clock pati radio. alternator pa din ba yun? thanks.

IC/diodes, brushes, and coils. Three things that can get busted.

Your starting problems sound like a weak battery. Maybe your alternator ain't alternating...?
If it's the solenoid, the clock doesn't usually reset, unless the battery is weak..

    dr d,

i just changed my battery 2 months ago. my obeservations aside from the high voltage reading of 15+V are. there are times when it does not start, no starting/clicking sound. i noticed my radio presets are gone and the car clock resets. iniisip ko baka problem sa battery connection. are these (IC/diodes, brushes, and coils) repairable?

uy gutz, mukhang may sira na rin alternator mo. have it checked nalang. are you going for a surplus or ipa-repair mo nalang yang alternator mo?

Had battery trouble and it turns out that my alternator is not charging/working anymore. I brought it to Wizzard and they gave me a quote of 13,580(Orig alternator assembly for Kia Picanto 2007 - 12,800 and labor - 780). According to them its highly unlikely that the alternator would be able to be repaired. I'm thinking of getting a second opinion. Might go to Rey's or the Toto guy in Banawe.

Having problems with alternators is quite tricky since if you don't have it taken down and opened then you wouldn't really know if they can repair it right? Or should I just have it done and just pay for the labor just to see if they can still salvage my old alternator.
