The Optra is comfortable, not top of its class for anything, but with good noise insulation and space.
The 1.6 AT is a definite gas guzzler, the 1.8, not so, as the engine's power is ideally matched to the transmission and the weight of the car.
GM's service is reputedly poor, but you'll have to wait to hear from Optra owners about it. Quite a few are satisfied, as the Optra carries a free service period much much longer than other automakers.
The main problems of the Optra are the fuel mileage of the 1.6 automatic (5-6? Some guys I've talked to get 4 km/l in traffic), a poorly designed intake tube (it's too low in the engine bay, near or below headlight level, thus vulnerable to floodwater) and the "maintenance free" battery that actually needs you to fill it with water from time to time.
I don't know if GM has addressed the battery problem, but they did say they've addressed the fuel consumption problem of the 1.6. I guess we'll have to wait to hear from the 1.6 Wagon owners about it before passing judgement.
