RE: Price of Optra... heck, everything is expensive these days... and the prices are just going up and up, instead of down...

Hey, if you wan a good deal, the last Lynx RS is still priced at 835. (same as a 1.6 Corolla S) For 3 years registration, a long warranty and free service, nice features (dual airbags, ABS, EBD, sunroof, 6-cd 6 speaker radio, bodykit, alloys, etcetera) that ain't bad... considering all you can get now for 800k are the base models of other compact cars... and no, the Civic 1.8 isn't quite as fast as the RS... at least, not yet... and the Accent, while almost as quick, can't handle or steer like the Lynx, and has absolutely nothing in terms of optional extras or safety equipment..
I'm getting around 10 to 12 liters per kilometer with the AC always turned on. That's a combo of city and hi-way driving(MT ako btw). Siguro if I was more economical minded(kasi half of the time feeling race driver ako sa SLEX)

Wow! 835K is really cheap considering the free service, plethora of features and accessories you got!

I should say 640K is a good deal. Good chiseled looks, updated engine with VGIS technology + a fully loaded package.

10-12 on the SLEX with a little zing-zing isn't bad. It's similar to what my cousin gets on his Mazda3 1.6.

Agree... 640k ain't bad. But the only way to really tell if it's worth the money is a real-world road test... ohhh carlooooo....

Ouch... one star?!? With the airbags? Those are some pretty crappy A-pillars...

Hmmm, can I take back what I said about value due to safety?

Holy smokes... based on the Euro NCAP data, the Kia Rio's A-pillars, steering wheel and pedals move backwards less than in the Chevrolet Aveo... meaning that it's possible that, despite the lack of an airbag, the risk of serious injury is even less in the local Rio? Interesting.

Hmmm... value for money, don'tcha think?

That's sad, both the Picanto and the Chevy Matiz (nee Spark) scored higher than the Chevy Aveo... why?!?

Interesting to note, the Toyota Yaris, despite a marginally greater deformation of structure than the Rio, scored five stars, because it has a knee-protecting airbag... wow.

One star?Baka yan yung Aveo 5 door at 3 door hatch.Cause AFIAK ang Aveo Sedan ay mas matibay(being based sa T250 improved platform) kaysa sa hatch versions.Made in Thailand pala ang Aveo Sedan..

The Euro NCAP states that it's the 2006 1.4 Sedan, equipped with frontal and side airbags. The picture supplied is identical to the one being sold here, except for equipped magwheels, tires and sunroof. It failed because the welds on the A-pillar gave way under the impact... kinda stupid thing to happen on a modern car.

All tests are done with cars equipped with airbags, the RP spec Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent have no airbags, I'm sure none of them would even get a single star.

    niky you missed one star...
Euro NCAP raiting: 2 stars strikethrough
    Australian NCAP raiting: 2 stars
    NHSTA crash raiting(US): 5 stars

The Rio's 2 additional stars over the Aveo goes to waste, since they deleted the airbags in the RP market model, same goes for almost all the cars in the Aveo's price range, Accent, Getz, City, Jazz etc.

PS: NCAP standards change, what we once considered as safe cars...
    Current NCAP scores:
    1997 BMW 3-series E36: 2 stars strikthrough
    1997 Saab 900: 2 stars trike through
    1997 Mercedes C-class: 2 stars

Here's a funny thing, the 2006 Chevrolet Kalos/Aveo hatchback got 3 stars at the NCAP, but the internal structure of the Kalos/Aveo hatchback(T200) and the new Aveo sedan(T250) are very similar.

For those wondering, the upgraded Aveo 1.5 hatchback sold here now comes with dual-airbags and ABS brakes, its priced the same as the Aveo sedan.

NCAP has been testing cars since the days when airbags were not mandated by law. Nakakakuha din naman ng stars yung non-airbag models. Hindi pa naman nagbabago ang test procedures nila.

With the new safety features now being made standard, the NCAP's safety standards have also been adjusted.

Cars with no airbags 16 years ago that got 4 or 5 stars for example would rate very very poorly now.

What I was actually pointing at was the fact that the Aveo failed because the crash cell gave way.

Stars are awarded on the Euro NCAP or NHSTA for prevention of injury. The Euro NCAP struck the second star because of the structural failure, which could cause death.

Airbags are only effective up to a point in preventing injury. At higher speeds or stronger impacts, the strength of the safety cell comes into question. While a 64 km/h impact is nowhere close to a 120 km/h impact, deformation of the safety cell and the direction in which it deforms gives a clue as to survivability of the vehicle in a crash.

The Rio also experienced structural failure of the footwell, but this is slightly less serious problem than A-pillars giving way. And note, in the crash test (download the PDFs), structural deformation elsewhere was less than in the Aveo or even the Yaris. This points well to crash safety on models not equipped with airbags.

It could have been an issue with that single unit (faulty welding = poor quality control in the European factory?) but it is worrisome nonetheless.

RE: While the older hatch scored high, the A-pillar design is different... weird that the new one is less sturdy... I hope it's just a freak occurence, though.

[quote=AG4;621471]The Thai built ASEAN Aveo sedan should look similar to the Aveo sedan sold in India.

The ASEAN Aveo will be manufactured in the same Rayong Thailand plant that manufactures the ASEAN Chevy Optra.

Expect the Thai built ASEAN Aveo sedan to be priced just below the equivalent Vios.
