Japanese Gadget Uses Battery To Help Motorists Save on Fuel

MANILA, Philippines — A device that is attached to a car’s battery can reduce fuel consumption by at least 30 percent, its manufacturer claims.

The device, called Ecomax, can also reduce air pollution, according to its Japan-based manufacturer Ojas Inc. The device was launched in Japan last year and the Philippines is the first country outside Japan where it was introduced.

Hiroyuki Sugawara, Ojas chief executive officer, launched and demonstrated the gadget at a jeepney terminal in Alabang, Muntinlupa last Monday. Free samples were given to five jeepney drivers.

Sugawara said Ecomax cuts fuel consumption by a minimum of 10 percent for city driving and a 10 to 30 percent for highway driving.

It also reduces smoke emission to zero, he said.

When clamped to the battery’s negative pole, the device emits a strong negative ion, maintaining the current at 12 volts so that output power is strong enough.

“When you start the engine of your car, the electric current running through the spark plug normally falls down to 9 to 10V due to load added. When Ecomax is attached to the negative pole of your car battery, output power loss is prevented to enable near complete combustion,” Sugawara said.

He said his firm test Ecomax on diesel-run jeepneys three months ago and the drivers reported a P100 daily savings on fuel and no smoke emission.

The manufacturer said Ecomax is made of natural ores and rare metals and does not use chemicals for its operation.

Elizabeth Carla Pekas, Ojas spokesperson, said Ecomax works for both diesel and gas engines.

Ecomax can be installed easily on cars and lasts up to five years, the manufacturer said.

Ojas said the Philippines was chosen as launching and testing ground because of high gas prices and dirty exhaust from vehicles.

The device will be available in the country by April, Pekas said.

Unfortunately with this round of fuel price increases, the usual fuel saving gadget scams will just increase as well. Just like the last one few years ago.
