November 10th, 2005 08:57 AM #457Coconut fuels vie for Petron support
Filipino-owned coconut-fuel companies Chemrez Inc. and Senbel Fine Chemicals are vying for the endorsement of their coconut-biodiesel products by Petron Corp., according to an industry source who claimed that both companies are in talks with the oil firm over the use and marketing of their alternative fuel products.
Publicly-listed Petron, which is 40 percent government-owned and a dominant player in the local oil industry, has already expressed support for the proposed 1-percent blend of coconut biodiesel in local diesel products.
However, the source disclosed that Petron is committed to endorse and market only one company in its pump stations nationwide.
Both companies’ combined coconut-biodiesel production capacity—75 million liters from Chemrez and 30 million liters for Senbel—is more than sufficient to meet the Philippines’ 70-million liter requirement, based on the country’s 7-billion diesel requirement.
Similarly, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. expressed its commitment to market pure coconut-biodiesel in its stations when the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) approves the use of alternative fuel for local cars.
The domestic vehicle industry remains apprehensive over using coconut-biodiesel for fear of possible engine problems.
Independent oil players meanwhile are either marketing or willing to sell the fuel.
Flying V and Seaoil are both selling preblended diesel with coconut methyl ester (CME) and pure coconut-biodiesel in their stations.
While Eastern Petroleum is currently offering pure coco-biodiesel in their branches, Unioil is also expected to follow suit. Meanwhile, Total Philippines has also expressed interest in selling the product but the plan is still under negotiations.
Only Caltex Philippines Inc. remains undecided whether to support the use of coconut-biodiesel in the country.
The domestic oil industry is pushing for a one percent blend of CME into diesel to cut down the Philippines’ dependence on expensive diesel products, which will result in the P115-million worth of savings from diesel imports every year.
It is also believed to incur a P16.49-billion reduction in fuel consumption at P26 a liter using the Mean of Platts Singapore benchmark.
Using preblended diesel with CME is also estimated to result to a 10-percent extra mileage for vehicles.

Maganda ito, kung matuloy ang suporta ng Petron sa biodiesel.
I'm still satisfied with my Chemrez-blended Envirotek biodiesel from Flying V.
