Yes, that's a good way to train your son: Second hand muna and siya mag maintain. Start with the basics and para makita niya how to get a car into good running condition and maintain it well, and to value it. Ganyan din ako nag start at a young age with my dad. Pero dapat maturo mo rin siya to be mature about it and huwag maging rezing-rezing boy na panay abubot and mods lang ang alam, lalo na pag yung barkada ay maging maimpluwensya sa kanya. Just read the Honda Civic SiR thread and you'll get our drift on that.

It's a mini owner type jeep. Definitely smaller than the regular ones, kaya nga mini eh.

A good choice for you since you'll always be seating more than 5 is the Starex. Meron ding matic version yan, although it's not as fuel efficient as the diesel AUVs, it's a lot more comfortable. Power is decent if you don't ask too much, turbo intercooler naman yan so if it's well maintained, it'll climb the slopes of Baguio no problem. Since it's still an old school diesel engine, maintenance is very basic too and it's built to last. Yun nga lang, siguradong sigurado todo hiram ito ni Kamag Anak Inc. siguro dumoble na mileage niyan by your next visit.

If you want something more deterrent to Kamag Anak Inc, but is still comfy for more than 5, best to get a big gasoline car. You get to enjoy the power of the car on your visits at hindi naman daily driver, OK lang gastos paminsan and siguro out of town naman kayo lagi so fuel consumption would not sting too much. Like bro myk384 said, you may consider the Carnival/Sedona 3.5V6. Or, you can consider the Expedition. AFAIK the later batches of the 1st gen model do not have the problematic air suspension anymore and some of them are even already converted to run on LPG.

Hindi pa nakapagdrive pero marunong na? Bago yun ah, based on my personal experience, napakalaki ang difference between theoretical knowledge and hands-on driving. Alam nga niya siguro how to operate all the controls in a car, hindi naman alam yung paano makisingit sa mga jeepney driver o kaya paano magpark ng maayos...

Hehehe. Since 14 years old I was driving an MT vehicle na kasi. So lisensya nalang talaga kulang sakin nung time na yun hehehehe

You really have to draw the line on your car if you get one; and yes expect enemies to emerge because you did not let them use it. If they want one, work for it right? I'll bet when you're in town, these same Kamag-Anak Inc. also rib you and your wife to treat the entire ankan. ;)

Marami talagang options for used cars nowadays. You just really have to take your time to look around and choose what you want and find to be in the best condition. If your wife really wants the CR-V, then by all means hanap kayo ng magandang unit. Since it's not an in-demand second hand car, it sold well enough when it was first released, and due to its poor FC figures, you can still find 1st owned, low mileage units i suppose.

    * the nissan Serena, don't even look at it; sakit sa ulo lang yan.

Basta ako simple lang naiisip ko sa ganyan at ang dami ko na nakita....kapag hiniram ng kamag-anak Incorporated and sasakyan mo paniguradong me masisira at masisira dyan. Buti kung kilala mong talagang maingat at MAY HIYA yung hihiram...eh kadalasan wala eh hehehe

Why not buy then sell it again upon leaving? I have immigrant relatives who do this. They buy from a suking auto-trader and use the vehicle as a daily driver for two months. Then they sell it again to the same guy upon leaving - often with just around 20K depreciation, sometimes less. More cost effective than renting. Also no headaches with maintenance since most dealers give 3 months warranty anyway. And best of all, you get to avoid the kamag-anaks in a non-confrontational way.

Since once a year lang kayo nakakauwi sa Pilipinas, KAYO nalang ang manghiram sa kamag-anak ninyo ng kotse whenever kayo uuwi, and offer to pay for any gas that you will use during this time.

    Looks more practical to me.
