I'm planning to buy a used 98 Galant(Pating) and currently I found 2. The only difference of the two is the mileage and origin. Price does'nt matter, its within my budget. Its the condition of the car that Im concern.

    40Tkm(beige) and 65Tkm(black)
The 40Tkm is from Dubai the other is local.
    Both are A/T and 2,000cc.

Is there anyone here who could help me look under the hoods and test drive the two to help me decide which one is worth to buy? Anyone who knows Galants and also have a shop to do the maintenance and MODS in the future. I know nothing under the hoods or about cars. But Im trying to learn them.

BTW, its gonna be my first car......and it should be a Galant!!!

Assuming the mileages are true, I'd always go for the significantly lower mileaged car... makikita mo naman kung totoo yung mileage based on wear and tear sa interior...

I suggest you do the standard checks for leaks under the car (have it hoisted/lifted), unusual noises, body panel gaps, compression check, check how the sparkplugs burn, check the AT oil colour and condition...

    Salamat glennster.

Parehong walang maintenance history- 2nd owner na yung local(pero nagtataka lang din ako bakit wala ng maintenance history), yun dubai -medyo sure ako its not so used, from what my friend says sa dubai, mabilis turnover ng mga sasakyan dun, parang damit kung magpalit ng sasakyan.

Pero to make sure, Im looking for someone who really know this kind of car, to check and test. I'll ask if napalitan na ang timing belt-if napalitan na...any problem with that?

basing on the mileage...sana napalitan na ang timing belt.kasi kung hindi..kailangan na papalitan.pagdating ng 90-100k kms niyan...pag naputol ang timing belt..babye engine.

    preventive maintenance lang.

btw..is is the VR V6 version or the sohc 4g63?

Actually pre sa AT kaya mo naman gawin yan, it's not like meron kang pwedeng tanggalin to check other than the dipstick to check the oil...

Dapat yung oil reddish pink na walang grainy/sandy residue...

Tapos pag shift from all the gears walang lag yung pagengage...

While on "D", dapat smooth yung shifting ng lahat ng gears, normally kung light footed, it'll shift around the 2K mark, basta regardless of gano kalakas ka tumapag dapat consistent yung shift and walang shock...

Other than that, wala ka naman masyadong magagawa sa AT...

Paano: Basta may pera, dalin sa magaling na pintor, tapos... preferably bili ka bagong weatherstrips, door panel clips etc...

Registration wala nang nakalagay sa OR/CR ang kulay.

kelangan pang kumuha ng TMG clearance, but you dont have to get a new CR at the LTO anymore.

glenn, i'm assuming parehong 4G63 since 2.0L pareho. 2.5L yung VR eh.

Dubious sa akin yung 40K mileage ng Dubai unit... I've checked out several before and halata na inikot yung mileage based on the overall car condition (actually nilagay din sa mga 40K+).

I'd go with the local unit. 65K isnt bad for a '98 model naman.

Our '97 Corolla XL has 97k on the odo, and it's not even an everyday car. It's been been a coding car since we got a Jazz, meron ring Revo that serves as a bad-weather/outing vehicle (i.e. the Revo gets used a lot as well).
