Any tips on where i can get a reliable source of second hand cars?

buy from relatives and such, whom you know to be conscientious in car maintenance.
    uncommon, but... it still exists.

then, there are the casas selling warrantied, pre-owned cars.
but too expensive, according to some folks.

For 1M, I’d take a used Forester XT than any of those small under-powered SUV wannabees. Power, handling, comfort plus cargo space like no other for anything new under 2M except a brand new Forester XT.

For 800k, you can get a used XV or non-turbo Forester.

I'd take the BRV over the Rush. More power and more civilized than the ladder frame, rear driven Rush. More practical than the HRV too, having more space and a 3rd row. The BRV engine has been in use in the City and Jazz for over a decade now and more recently also in the Mobilio and with a turbocharged form in the Civic. I believe that says something about the engine's reliability. I don't know how it behaves in the BRV, but I have driven the latest Jazz and it was really good.

If you're willing to go 2nd hand, I'd suggest the 2013-2017 Santa Fe. Lower resale value than Japanese PPVs of the same vintage. Thrifty diesel engine with loads of power and a sedan like ride. Get the newest your budget allows. At 1.2M, that would probably be 2015-2016. If your father is used to Expedition power, I'm sure he'll love it.

We met several sellers who were in a hurry to sell their cars for different reasons. The cheapest we encountered was 600k.

Maybe BRV is a more practical choice than HRV. I will look into it as well. Thanks for all the suggestions! On a side note, we previously bought a car based on recommendations i got from this forum, and we are very happy about our purchase. So thanks a lot!

Going back, is mazda cx3 also a good option?

A CX5 would be a better family vehicle. The CX3 is even smaller inside than the HRV.

You're better off with the Mazda 3 if considering the Mazda CX-3 ... roomier, cheaper, better to drive ... ground clearance advantage if the CX-3 is only about 3-5 mm ... the CX-3 is based on the smaller Mazda 2 platform ...
