    Corolla GLI.
Because the 4AFE engine is quite reliable and fuel efficient. We had this car as my father's company car before and we had no complaints about it.

Unless the 1997 XE is fuel-injected, which I think is carburated, the GLI should be more gas-efficient in the long run ...

For me since I do the repair of our cars & knows something in vehicle technology, I prefer Toyota XE97, if carburated. Carburated cars or vehicle is easy to repair compared to any car that is EFI (fuel injected) & have computer boxes. EFI cars are really fuel efficient. But if your computer box got problem, how much is a surplus or second hand computer box? P8,500 pesos po. Carburators are easy to repair

Consider that E10 gasoline will be sold at the gas pumps. That means carb engines will either have accelerated wear & tear issues or require more attention to run smoothly.

Best to choose more modern EFI systems as these tend to give better fuel efficiency. But make sure the car isn't too old either because electronics do have limted lifetimes as well.

Personally, I would choose a Corolla GLi with a 4AFE 1.6L engine. It is a very popular car even today. Spare parts will not be a problem for a very long time. You will also have lots of choices on the used car market so finding one in good condition isn't a problem. Just try finding one that doesn't have the mileage on the odometer saying it has been driven to the moon and back.

I'd get the City. It's plenty quick and very very fuel efficient (even the matic 1.3L). I bet it can keep up with Corolla GLi without consuming as much fuel. Also, it is already EFi.

Are you referring to the City 1.3L iDSi? ... if you are, it is not quick. It just "feels" quick accelerating from 0-100kph.

And this model / generation City's CVT tranny has it's own set of problems.

Of course, i am referring to the SX body City (gen1). It is what the TS is asking after all.

97 Corolla vs 97 City ... hmmm, wouldn't it be hands down that the Corolla be the better choice?

Corolla would be the better option here (provided all cars are in good condition ung pinagkukumparahan natin). In terms of fuel consumption, hindi sila nagkakalayo (1.6 EFI vs 1.3 Carb vs 1.3 EFI). In terms of parts and maintenance cost, wala na atang tatalo sa toyota (availability and price).

to TS, 1.6 GLI would be the best option. Pwede mo pa gamitin ng mas matagal kesa sa 1.3 Carb since lahat ng gas will eventually E10 blended.
