Were looking for a 2nd car which is fuel efficient and less maintenance on a long run.it will travel 100kms daily.90% expressway and 10%national road.
and is it true that 3cylinders consumes more fuel on highways?and it is only good on city driving?
as of now, were eyeing with the brio for its 4cyclinder.

Are you limiting your choices to gas powered ones? Your daily routine, like mine, involves mostly expressway runs. I chose a diesel instead & have not regretted it.

We have 2014montero glx.base on my computation,it saves me on diesel consumption vs the 21km/l of mirage gas.the problem is the maintance cost of the montero.another thing thats why were eyeing for subcompact car is the space of my parking, sedan will not going to fit.

may discount lagi yan. sa mga second hand car dealer sila na ang bahalang mag-ayos ng mga papeles. prepare ka na lang ng budget para sa mga papalitang parts at change oil.

Pinakamatipid mirage. Well mas tipid ang alto pero mas ok ang mirage dahil more power for expressway. Ang layo ng 100km daily ah. Hehe. I dont know how to compute kung accent diesel ang kukunin, if it's cheaper since high mileage ang route. Madali lang mag20km/liter ang accent diesel e

Una naming plano is mirage glx but minsan naitanong ko sa isang mekaniko bout 3 cyclinder cars.ang sabi eh,matipid daw sya for city driving but for highway(long ride)eh matakaw din daw kaya sana maliwanagan ako sa usaping ito.kaya ngayon kinoconsider namen is honda brio dahil 4 cyclinder na sya.compact cars lang talaga ang magpifit sa garahe hence maliit sya madali ang manuvere papasok at palabas pagnagsabay sila ng montero sa garahe.let's say lipa to mamplasan via startoll, actex and slex VV daily papasok ng work.

i could easily go 18km/l on highway driving on mirage... (80 to 120kph *3-3.5krpm)
the thing with 3 cylinders, it is best for city driving but is also capable on highway driving. if you are going to haul people and things with it, then go for 4 bangers. if mostly alone, 3 bangers are alright.

if you are willing to shell out money on brio, maybe, you should also consider suzuki swift, toyota yaris, mazda 2 just for the sake of comparing.

The swift 1.2 is a 4-cylinder hatch. During an eco run from top gear a few years ago, the 1.4 AT Swift managed Prius-like fuel efficiency. I guess this 1.2L version should even do better.

Oo nga pala. Swift. Mas ok ang swift kaysa brio kung 4 cyclinder ang gusto

How did that mechanic arrived in that theory na matipid lang ang 3-cylinder sa city driving? Theoretically, 3-cylinder engines provided same displacement sila ng 4-cylinder will have better fuel efficiency since 3-cylinder engines has leas friction load of parts. Less load means less effort, less effort translate into fuel consumption. Actually sa fuel efficiency, kailangn mo rin consider ang: no. of passengers, driving habit, tire pressure even aerodynamics. Those are just some of the things to consider.
Manufacturers produce each of their sub-compacts to be fuel efficient. As long as your pick can fit nicely with your monty in your garage, you'd be fine. If it doesnt fit your garage then scratch it from the list.
Maintenance- as long as you follow routine PMS religiously, your car will last for a long time.
Maintenance cost- I dont think it will cost you an arm naman. Its a sub-compact

based on my experience a smaller engine can consume more fuel than bigger engine ones.
why? because you need for it to go full throttle to attain your required and desired highway speed.
its not because of the number of cylinders or the displacement of the engine.

classic example: i average around 12-13 kpl in my 1.6 MT altis, but around 10 kpl in my getz.
but, i only average around 9 kpl in my altis in city driving, but around 11 in my getz.

but the advantage of smaller displacement engines is that it is very suitable for city driving.

btt, i prefer the mirage.... more toys.... second choice would be the wigo....

pareho kami situation ni TS. last year around april i was asked by a friend (used to work for honda) to wait for the brio, i was advised by my officemate naman to wait for the 1.2l swift, before making my decision. long story short i still ended up getting the swift, AT na nga lang instead of MT; kakaintay ng better options kasi

reco ko is in this order
    swift
    swift dzire
    mirage

    my input...

    1. Mirage GLS fully featured but not opted by TS. 673k
    - longer wheelbase.
    - bigger trunk space.
    - higher ground clearance.
    - more fuel efficient.
    - split rear folding seats....more space
    - 15x5 wheels
    - gps navigation
    - side impact beams

    2. Honda Brio S AT cheaper than above. 650k, nothing of the above.
    .
    .
    10. Mirage glx.... 14x4.5 tires(scary lol) no ABS, no EBD, no stabilizer bar(front)

Apparently a lot of people (your mechanic included) still think that 3-cylinder engines are inherently inferior to 4-cylinder engines, even if displacement and power/torque outputs are equal.

If you're on a budget and are looking for a cheap but well-packaged and fuel efficient car, the Mirage is your best bet.

It's the most efficient gas-fed automatic car in the market right now, and is the only one in its class with high-end features such as push button ignition, Bluetooth, GPS, leather steering wheel with audio controls, automatic climate control, and so on.
