Are you a first-time car buyer?
What matters most is the capacity to pay, operate and maintain one in car ownership.
Therefore, if budget is not limited...brand new na.
If resources are limited...then you have to compromised...A pre-owned one is the next best thing. But there are a lot of variables involved...previous ownership, condition of car, etc. So you have to dissect each of these factors to come up with a what really is a decision of compromised....given what is available at the time you decide kon saan ka masaya at di mo pagsisihan.
Napansin ko lang yon mga gas guzzlers, ang laki ng depreciation.
Example, Ford Escape for a less than 5 year-old vehicle model halos kalahati na ang market value sa acquisition cost. Compare to an almost 10 years old Crosswind XTO, a cheaper model...halos kasing presyo na lang sa second-hand market.
Your decision bro.

fuel efficiency is the name of the game nowadays & also maintenence cost, so go for a new fuel-efficient gasoline-fed sub-compact sedan.

Mahirap and motorsiklo....mura nga gagastusin....pero katawan naman ang ipupuhunan mo. Baka in the end mas mahal pa because you will be paying for the bodily harm or susmaryosep your life.
Back to topic, yes, it all boils down to affordability.

Whatever the case maybe, New or Secondhand, buy a fuel efficient car.
It'll save you money on fuel and makes a good investment. Bad buy are those guzzlers, for sure sooner or later, its depreciation is speedier than how it consumes fuel come the time you've had enough of the soaring gas prices.
