peru kung subic, better buy 2.5L 4d56. lagyan mo nalang ng airscoop hood para mukhang 2.8L. mas matakaw ang 4m40 lalo na sa a/t.
napansin ko lang while sa yard ako--parang mas may "lakatak" ang 4m40 than 4d56.. is it because dahil timing chain ang 4m40...or may prob na yung 4m40 na nadinig ko...
Yan din ang sabi ng isang chief mechanic dito sa mitsu casa. Mas gusto daw niya ang 4D56 kasi belt driven kaya mas tahimik. Ang 4M40 at 4M41 ay chain driven, tahimik sa simula, pero pag nagtagal na, mga 80-100k kms, mas maingay na kesa 4D56. Madali naman daw magpalit ng belt.
Ang ayoko lang sa 4D56 ay mas-mausok at mas mahina ang power (older generation).
a--so chain problem pala yung nadinig ko--palitin na din siguro yun... (mga may 100K din reading nun,e..)
japan 4d56-t naman di gaano mausok pag-nakatono,e...
ang bagong 4d56-na may CRDi--timing belt din kaya or t.chain na...
i-ll try to compare on this more...

Yung 4D56 na nasa new strada, timing belt pa rin.
Yung timing chain ay di kailangan palitan coz it's supposed to last the lifetime of the engine. But there are instances where the timing chain needs to be replaced, especially when it has gotten loose (I just don't know what would cause this, probably wear and tear). And replacing the timing chain is very very expensive and very tedious.
I drive a chain driven Mercedes with almost 300,000kms on it.
The timing chain and its associated components have never been replaced. True it's a bit noisier but not to the point that it bothers you.
Btw, mechanics hate timing chains. It's less income for them. :D
As for the 4d56 vs 4m40, I appreciate the extra 25 horses of the 2.8. I used to drive a 4d56 Pajero as a daily driver and would get to drive the company Field Master 2.8 from time to time. The 2.8 is more able to carry the weight of the Pajero.
In terms of fuel economy, you're going to need to run the 2.5 harder to match the the 2.8's speed. If you want to be economical, you can drive the 2.5 like grandma.![]()

4m40 and 4d56 engines are both reliable. Go for the 4m40 for more power. Will not actually give you a powerful pajero but as what Otep said, its more suited for the weight of the rig.
I think 4m40s are sold with ATs nga lang.
ayon sa kuro-kuro..may ilang ilang local paje gen.2.5 na 4wd manual... 1999 below ata... mga 2000 bihira na 4wd, peros puros matic na....
kahit jdm model, mga 4m40 na pajero/spacegear mostly nasa lower trim variants...
pero, yung 1998 jdm 4m40 puts out daw 140ps, eto at yung Di... ung local sa atin ay pareho lang sa nirelease sa japan noon 1994-96 na 4m40--120ps ata yun....
4M40 for me. True the engine makes a more mechanical sewing machine sound but at the end of the day, it also makes ~26 more horses. I really cant compare the fuel consumption of both since hindi apples to apples comparison yung experience ko on both (had an MT 4D56 and of course my current AT 4M40), but if we did, the 4M40 with AT is 1 km/L thirstier than the 4D56 with MT.
when i still had my pajero 4d56 TDIC, it would go around 450km per full tank. When I sent it to the casa for some repairs, talked with the driver of a 4m40 pajero. Sabi niya, they also had the 4d56 version before, and more or less similar yung fuel consumption sa akin. Their 4m40 however, gets up to 100km more per full tank, which makes it around 550km. I forgot however to check if their 4m40 pajero was M/T or A/T.
uhm whats the regular consumption of 4M40 and 4D56 in terms of Kilometer per Liter.. coz mine i think my 4d56t only gets from 6-7kms per liter...
I think the fuel consumption of 4D56 and 4M40 doesn't really matter, one way or the other 4M40 may be thirstier, but that depends on how you drive against the 4D56. What matters is the HP you get when you needed it.
OT: May be its just me... just learned over the weekend that Mitsubishi is already selling Strada that has 4M41 engine.

it because of different driving habbits that makes 4m40 and 4d56 seem consuming most likely the same. but then I drive both in conservative mode. the difference is noticable.
ah so wala palang local m/t na 4m40.. that figures wala talaga akong makita...
more than a year ago, I asked here if a/t to m/t convertion 4d56 pajero is worth it. all peep says it's not, because it does not justify the cost of convertion in the little difference of a/t vs m/t fuel consumption. but it was worth it... our m/t converted pajero did made a worth difference in the consumption...

a jdm 4m40, is chain, but the noise level is not that big difference. I'm not really sure but looks like 4m40 jdms has already some kind of ABS...
