Hi! I'm planning to buy a new car by year-end. The thing is, due to my work, most of the times I'm based in Baguio-Benguet, but I also report to our Manila office oftentimes. I know 4X4, pick-up trucks and SUVs are ideal for such terrains. (btw, it's a paved uphill road naman) But it's not within my budget. Too, since I'm single and practicality wise, I don't see the need yet for a larger body type. I'm just contemplating on relatively cheaper compact SUVs like Ecosport or the mini SUV Honda BR-V or the mini MPV Honda Mobilio. But I'm also considering sedan/hatchback like Mazda 2 or Toyota Yaris.

(btw, we're talking A/T here, don't wanna go back to driving manual na )

For now, I'm close to getting an Ecosport after speaking with a Ford dealer and presented with an interesting promo deal.

Your thoughts will be of big help for me to decide wisely.haha Thank you.

The HRV has a bit more power and torque than the Ecosport. I think that would fit the bill. The Subaru XV is too pricey na.

^ Yes get the HRV! Looks-wise it is also better than the ecosport.

Hi! Thanks for your insight. Well, I did not include HRV in my options since it's a bit more pricey than BR-V and Ecosport. But will take this into consideration and read more about HR-V. Thanks again!

Hi! Hmmmm, i'm getting more votes for HRV. Okay, will read more about this model. Btw, besides the more power and torque than ecosport, do know know issues about ecosport in terms of reliability?

if you need torque, go diesel.

be wary of the deal for the ecosport. baka yung old model yan na madaming issues sa tranny. if it is a dct tranny then stay well far away.

imho, since practical ka, then take OBs advice. get an outgoing suzuki vitara. normally aspirated engine and torquey enough for your needs.

steep uphill puts a lot of strain on the drivetrain so you need a strong transmission coz this is like towing heavy stuff. so that rules out the problematic DCT on the ecosport. my sis just went to baguio on the ecosport DCT and didn't like the performance at all
the manual version has very short 1st and 2nd so it'll climb but very slowly

BRV and HRV are both CVT-only. constantly doing steep climbs isn't going to be very healthy for CVT, just like towing isn't recommended on CVT cars

How much exactly is the budget? For uphill climbs I much prefer using diesels. Perhaps you can consider the Kia Soul CRDi. Same engine as the Accent but using a traditional 6AT instead of the apparently problematic 7DCT in the Accent.

I have a forester, an ecosport and a jimny and have driven the 3 up to Baguio a couple of times. Of course the forester is the smoothest and the fastest climber while the jimny is the crawler but dependable on rough roads. Surprisingly, the ecosport (titanium) performed well, albeit slow, but if you are not in a hurry, the 4 door option and the price is within your expectations. You just need to get used to the DCT timing when going uphill. It is like driving a manual where you need to let go lightly the accelerator pedal for a split second and push it again to shift to a lower gear and put more power to the engine. You can also use the S option so you can manually choose the gear.

I climb Baguio several times a month and at a quick pace. 17,000 km in 4 months and nothing unusual whatsoever with my CVT. I'll hit 50,000 before the car turns a year old so let's see if anything crops up.

But after several months of ownership, today's current crop of CVTs are much better than that of the earlier Lancer Cedia and City iDSi - less slip, quicker response. Even the Lancer EX CVT which has been around for a decade hasn't had any widespread cases of premature CVT failure.

I have a DCT vehicle and a CVT vehicle. I never had problems with performance on both vehicles. Baguio was not even a challenge.

Going up hilly terrain will not be a problem for most cars. Get it on the right gear and you're good to go. It depends really on how fast do you plan to charge up and down the hilly terrain.

1st gen ecosport? that's from the early 2000's i think look it up

but the current ecosport has been unchanged since its release in 2013/2014. the new facelifted model (already out in india) has a new 3cyl engine and new conventional 6spd A/T (non-DCT)

Apologies Im referring to the 2014 release, I considered it before. So until now same pa din sila tranny?

Hindi pala problematic, sanayan lang talaga ng gamit as what like bro dreamur said.

Ford used the same dry-type DCT for the previous gen Fiesta (1.6L), previous gen Focus (1.6L and 2.0L NA), current gen Fiesta (1.5L NA, 1.0L turbo), and current gen Ecosport (1.5L NA).

If you drive it like a traditional AT, you'd be pissed. Drive it like an MT and it will be to your advantage.
