The Lancer EX CVT is not sluggish (well, from a dead stop, it acts like any other A/T). Once rolling, the CVT is just as fast as the M/T. Niky and I had the opportunity to drive the GTA and GT variants back-to-back and chased each other around the test drive area. Both cars are just as fast.
The reason why the CVT feels sluggish is the smoother delivery of power from the CVT. I can attest to this since my other car (a Corolla) uses a traditional A/T and power delivery from the CVT feels very different. Smooth with no transitions for each "gear' since there is no gears. With the Lancer EX CVT, the engine just revs up to a certain RPM level and stays there while the speed increases (along with the tranny CVT ratio).

And since it's a CUV, it looks more expensive than a sedan. hehe
