Just helping out a friend who wants a car to keep for years. The Galant is cheaper, and has cheaper parts though W123 owners say that parts are relatively at par nowadays with their Jap counterparts. Also, since he wants a diesel Benz, fuel consumption would favor the W123. Both already have cult status, so he's having a hard time choosing.

    Thanks in advance!

The Benz, if we're talking decades of ownership. Cosmetic parts will be easier, too... though not as cheap.

Thanks. Maintenance wise, do you think there would be much of a difference?

Pretty insightful post. Never thought that it was this simple after all. I had spent a good deal of my time looking for someone to explain this subject clearly and you’re the only one that ever did that. Kudos to you! Keep it up!

This will depend on the driving style/priorities of the driver, if for sunday relax drive around town, cruising mode lang then go for benz. For sporty, spirited(hataw-hataw), carving up the mountains drive - GTI. For this comparo I'll pick the GTI, for me it can give a fairly comfy ride w/ a bit of attitude(especially if you make it into a VR4).

keeper car: Galant GTI vs. W123 Benz
