You could try what we used to do... naked velocity stacks on twin carbs... now that's dirty air. Of course, we put mesh material on top to keep pebbles out, and we had to change the oil a bit more often...

The extra dust and particles that the K&N lets in are minimal, and normally inconsequential, unless you have a sensitive MAF.
