Hello,

Im new in this forum and new in buying cars. Me and my husband is planning to buy a car since we will be having a baby soon and we think its important to have a better transpo (as compared to commuting) when the baby is born. Our parents are suggesting to buy a brand new toyota vios with 1.3 engine while we plan to buy a 2nd hand 2002 model 1.3z honda city.

The brand new vios is a good choice since there will be less maintenance but the higher cost will have longer amortization (5 years at 10K/month).

The 2nd hand city is good choice since the amortization will only be for 2 years at 8K.

1. My question is that is it safe to buy 2nd hand car today knowing that many cars where submerged in flood water during the unfortunate Odoy time?

2. Would there be a way to identify if the car was a victim of the Ondoy?

suggestion would greatly be appreciated

Buying an 8yr old car? For sure there are lots of parts and fluids that need to be replaced. Allocate around P50,000.00 for miscellaneous repairs, parts, fluids, tires, etc....

Getting a brand new car is always better, as long as your budget allows for it.

There's nothing really bad about buying 2nd hand vehicles especially with those whose budget are quite tight. If you think that you can pay the amortization without affecting your financial and current state then go, the brand new vios is better and the freshened up design is just released. However if you're quite unsure about your budget then you could stay away from new vehicles, first.

Remember ....

1. You will have a new baby soon. Having a baby is like having a vehicle, you should take care of him/her and you should allot a LOT of money for him/her.

Congrats ma'm Ann in your upcoming baby and may you choose the best choice.

BTW, let me share this few guidelines that I made that could help you in choosing the right 2nd hand vehicle ...

In buying a second hand vehicles, it is important to consider some facts first.

1. It is very hard to spot a flooded vehicle from the not-flooded ones. Especially if, this has been cleaned completely.
The best thing to do ? Look at the place, ask some people there if that particular place has been flooded or not, if it is
avoid the vehicle ASAP.

2. In buying a 2nd hand vehicle, it doesn't stop from paying the vehicle itself ... the spending of money goes on and on.
And, in buying a 2nd hand vehicle, expect repairs.

3. A car, isn't an INVESTMENT. You don't really get money from it, unless you`re planning to keep it for several years
until it becomes vintage already.

4. Stay cool in driving. You'll never know what you might encounter, so the very best thing to do to avoid road rage is
keeping your head cool as possible. Take a cup of coffee if you want, or yet ... don't drive if you're experiencing personal
problems.

Now, to see if the vehicle is in it's greatest condition ... you must do the following.

1. Check odometer readings. But don't just rely on this ... some, tampers this to lower the reading itself for them to fool
buyers.

2. Before you bring a trusted mechanic with you, it's better if you check the basic parts of the vehicle first. The power
features if it's working, dents on the body, scratches, squeeking sound if any. Those basic things wont really be
needing a mechanic, a good ear and a good eye will do.

3. Check the engine if there are any problems. This will need you the mechanic. Let him check if there are any things
that needs replacing ... list it down, count the cost then minus it from the total price of the vehicle.

4. Check also the brakes. Check if its forming rust etc. Especially in drum brakes.

5. Check also the other electrical stuffs. The radio, is it working ? The power antennas ( if available ) etc.

6. Aircon too, check it. Is it cool enough for the cabin or does it need cleaning already or freon additions.

7. Test drive. You need to push the car to 100kph. Here, you can see if there is any wiggling issues.
Also do check the idling of the vehicle ? Too harsh or is it just normal ?

8. Check vehicle history. You can go to the LTO to check it.

9. Haggle the price down. The lower the better.

Thanks to all that replied. All your our suggestions will be a great help in our decision. Actually, our parents will also be helping in the monthly amortization, therefore we can afford even a brand new car. Thanks to Renzo for the guideline for second hand car. Thanks to Ishimaro also. I never realize until now that safety should come first. And tama "di dapat tinitipid si baby". Today, we will be looking at brand new vios, we will try to get discounts.

^ If you can, then good. Tama, try to have discounts .... pigain mo ang SA mo and REMEMBER, wag ka lang titingin sa isang dealer. Different dealers and SA's tend to have different freebies and discounts that they can give you. If you want a bigger vehicle, try looking at the lancer cedia ... paktay ka nga lang sa gas nun. :rofl:

Nothing beats a brand new car lalo na toyota. And it is nice to know that your family will help you finance the p720t tag of the vios.

But for other tsikoteer peeps here who cannot afford brand new ride, the honda city 1.3 type z is also a wise buy! You can get a decent type z for around p250t, and that is matic na din! But before buying, do first your homework by scouting around. Do not buy on the basis of impulse, this process would take time of course because you need to get the least head ache (if there are any) there is. You can shell around 50t to 75t for the repairs if any.

IMHO, honda cars by the way are more durable than the other japanese branded cars.

For the balance p395t (of p720t), you can use this money for the delivery and upbringing of your baby.

I was clearly discussing the Vaio not the Innova.

The Innovas specially the 2.5 D4D's got their own share of problems where TMP claimed it as diesel incompatibility. BTW maybe you don't know, Vaios do not have D4D's under their bonnet.

kahit naman Vios yan e hindi parin tayo sure sa quality. hindi maganda pinag dadaanan ng Toyota ngayon dahil sa problem nila sa accelerator pedals at D-4D engines (baka meron pa)

Now going back, vios is really a good buy. Kahit 2nd hand nyan mataas p din resale value. Imagine 1.3 with vvti! Wow talaga yan!

Vios na! It's brand new, so at least much less worries. The 1.3AT seems like a nice choice. Wala ring notorious na issue sa Vios so it's overall a good buy; if you don't mind its sheer ubiquity, that is.

1.3L DOHC engine pa. powerful enough. ok din yung suggestion mo. used Vios. kung ganyan baka 1.5G pa mabili nila diba. better kung yung Vios 1.5XX or 1.5S

jelynne, subukan nyo maghanap ng used Vios tulad ng sabi ni blue. sa 720K mga less than 2 years old 1.5G na yan. ang 2008 1.5G A/T ngayon nasa 580-620k nalang

Try to avoid second hand bec. of that Ondoy incident. Lots of spurced up flooded cars are literally flooding the market. I know of an owner of a 07 Civic FD 1.8S that got flooded 3 ft beyond the roof of the car last Ondoy. The car was "restored" by Honda Manila in four months time. But the owner claimed that it was never the same and sold it for "only" 250K. I looked at the car and indeed it looked pre-Ondoy on the outside. Dont know about the inside, though. My point is, given the severity of the Ondoy and how it greatly affected many, it is much easier to get duped into buying a flooded car.

As for the 1.3 A/T Vios, it provides the convenience of an AT but with quite a few downsides. Don't expect excellent fuel economy rates. The engine esp. mated to an AT will have poor performance. We are not talking slow but rather a difficulty on the engine to perform at all.

Yup, kung 2nd hand na vios man, yung 2nd gen na.. Kasi mas spacious di hamak yung 2nd gen.. Nakasakay na ako sa 1st gen vios na taxi, noticeable talaga ang difference pag pinag-compare mo yung dalawa.. Sobrang tipid pa sa FC! The best I got was 20.64km/l more on highway driving of course.. Recently lang ito..

EDIT: +1 on sir number's post.. Ingat na lang sa mga na-Ondoy.. And if you'll get a 1.3 vios, whether bnew or 2nd hand, get an M/T.. The 1.3 can be underpowered kasi kapag maraming load trust me.. And mas matipid kapag M/T
