Focus vs Lancer vs Impreza

The C! magazine released an issue of 2.0 variants comparison late December 08, that include those three cars mentioned by TS. Lancer wins, Focus followed closely in second place (thanks to their rear AC vents). Other cars included on their review were Altis, Honda and Mazda.

in the January 2009 Topgear issue, they chose the Focus over the Lancer due to its dual clutch tranny. But they both left the 2.0V altis to the dust.

All of these cars would really oblige when brought out to play. It just boils down on everyday practicality and the buyer's preference.

But if you have the dough, the WRX is going to eat all of them alive on the road.

If you're considering ATs only, I wouldn't get the Impreza... old, anemic 4-speed AT.

The Mitsubishi CVT is a great thing to use... better than a traditional automatic, and it doesn't quite feel as power-sappingly sluggish as the Honda CVT (though the difference in power compared to an MT is still there). The paddle-shift mode is responsive... even more responsive than the manumatic mode of the Focus. If you like flappityflap-paddling like in a race car, this is it.

But the Focus's DSG is hands-down the best automatic in the class. Incredible shifts, very responsive in automatic mode. Oh... and it's tons faster than the other two...

All three cars are great handlers. The Lancer has tons of grip and little body roll... the Impreza is supple but very willing to change direction... while the Focus feels light and nimble on its feet, though it has less rubber than the other two.

For a long distance car, both the Focus and Impreza are better than the Lancer... the Subaru's long stroke suspension absorbs bumps better than the Focus's compact rear control-blades, but Ford's well-tuned shocks provide a firm but well-controlled ride. The Lancer is thumpy and stiff by comparison, with its 18-inch wheels. BUT... and it's a big BUT... the Lancer has a much bigger rear seat than either of the hatchbacks... and a much better stereo

None of the three cars have a Civic-worthy interior... the Subaru has decent plastics, but is decidedly old-fashioned... the Lancer's plastics are, to put it bluntly, pure crap, but the interior is attractive in the same spartan manner as the Swift... while the Focus has the best cabin in terms of looks and plastic quality... except for the naff design on the center console.

The fuel economy of either the Lancer or Subaru automatic won't be quite as good as the Focus... expect about 6-7 km/l for the Lancer or Subie in rush hour... possibly 8-11 for the Focus Powershift (versus 10-13 for the Focus 6MT).

Personal Choice?

I'd only be happy with a Subaru 2.0R MT... the shifter is sweet and suits the car well... and I don't think it's complete without it. (hell, I'd love to buy one!) The WRX? It'll be thirstier, heavier and more expensive to own. The 2.0R isn't fast, but it's involving, nimble, and easy to provoke into a four-wheel drift. Add the Speedlab turbo-kit and it's as fast as a stock WRX for much less money.

The Lancer makes very few compromises when you choose the automatic variant, and it's arguable, really, whether the Lancer MT or CVT is better. Flip a coin. It has the best looks in the class... 18" wheels, a good stereo, a great body kit, a large (but again... plasticky!) interior. Only real compromise is the ride with those 18" wheels.

The Focus TDCi is your classic have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too car... giving you both performance and economy. It's more mature than the previous car, better on the inside, and has more kit and features. Still has a small back seat (not as small as the Impreza's), and you'll want to change to better tires right away, but hey, we all have to make sacrifices, right?

For me the thing that weighs heavily in favor of the Focus tdci is the dual clutch transmission and (turbo) diesel. We are talking German technology and craftsmanship at a Japanese price. I.e. value for money.

Just a thought - for the same price which would you choose: Mercedes/BMW vs Lexus/Acura?? Don't get me wrong but I highly respect Japanese engineering and quality.

All 3 have racing pedigrees.......but the Focus throws in the proposal something more, i.e. practicality (diesel fuel) which as a layman I can fully relate. You can use it everyday and still have some change left in your pocket.

One thing though, I still don't know the running costs of the 3. If the Focus will cost a king's ransom to maintain it then it will altogether become another ballgame.

No doubt the Impreza is likewise an exceptional car. But its image is more of a hardcore hobbyist car. You will rarely see a family man with wife and say 3 kids in this one. Or maybe a 50 or 60 year old man in the driver's seat (unless he is an ex-racer).

The Focus is like a Jekyll and Hyde. It can be a racer's car and its just the same at home as a family car. No problem lending it to Dad. Practical? You bet. Go Focus!!!

siempre Ford Focus TDCi since diesel sya mas mura compare sa gas..saka matuling ito..test drive mo yung tatlo saka ka mamili..

kung me gas allowance ka sa company mo subaru kana..pero ang ganda ng handling ng focus, puntahan mopo ang www.topgear.com tingnan mo ang review nila sa Focus TDCi..sya ang the best hatch in its class...talo nya ng Volkswagen Golf, vauxhall, renault etc...
