Please be specific. Gas or Diesel?
I'll go with Tucson, mapa gas or diesel.
no one wins, you can't really compare both since one is a hatch and the other a cuv. maybe you could tell us a bit more about why you choose those 2 so we could help you out properly instead of a bunch of people just saying which one they want more. so what do you need in a car? like do you need some thing big or small or more room or just the right size or what you want in a car? performance, comfort, handling, power, great fc, luxury? do you need higher ground clearance? provide us some more info so we can actually help you out properly.
good questions. here goes. i have always been a car person never really into suvs. since college with 2door civic hatchback to 99 civic to 2010 altis. but now since i have a family and we are looking for another car my wife wants a SUV size. actually it is easier to compare the focus to the tucson because they have comparable powerful diesel engine(am i right?). But i still have no problems sticking with a sedan version (not hatch back focus). im just open to the idea thats all.
what is important to me is balance of fuel consumption and power. i do not really care for luxury BS. i am satisfied with our corolla altis 1.6G. it has a good fuel consumption and adequate power. but this time im looking for a little bit more power since this will be my car. i have never bought diesel engines in cars before but i think fuel costs make me think its the better thing to do. but what is the long term effect of a diesel engine? will it be busted in 10 years? and how about the pollution? will it get dirtier by the year and will cause a lot of engine problems? i think this is a whole new issue. anyway both brands have similar sized diesel engines so i think i will get similar torque and speed. i do welcome the bigger space but both brands are already bigger than the altis.
this now brings me to the quality of these 2 cars. which one is better quality? (ex toyota is basic/stardard while honda is a notch higher in feel, quality and premium) who make the longer lasting engine? (honda hardly breaksdown while toyota always has a problem) who has the better after sales service? who builds with better materials?
i do not know much about these brands. but i know that ford focus is something like car of the year in europe (dont know why). i would appreciate all your inputs and a lively discussion. thanks!

well since you put it that way i'd go with the tucson if you're going to buy the premium, hyundai right now has the best diesel engine available in the philippines for the price range. it's great all around car, it has power, good handling, space, great features, looks great, good fc. i can't really determine the build quality of both since i'm not that impressed by both cars quality, hyundai's quality is only ok for me but it could be better i don't know but i feel like their cars aren't that solid yet, but they are getting there. ford's quality, well it's a ford they're not really known for reliability. also there's a new focus coming out(or is it out already?) which will probably take a while for the philippine market to get so i'd rather wait for the new one.
Are those your only options or are you open to other vehicle suggestions?
Example: Mitsubishi Lancer EX GTA, Subaru Forester, Mitsubishi ASX GLS, Subaru Impreza 2.0L HB...
The Focus Ghia's interior looks like crud compared to the Tucson, but I like the assembly of the Ford a bit more.
These two are in totally different classes. You can get a much more loaded Focus for the same price as a pretty basic Tucson, but there's no local Focus model that matches the top-spec Tucson CRDi (it has more power, more technology and more luxury than the top-spec Focus TDCi hatchback).
If you're looking for something nice and sporty but also with the legs for long-distance cruising, the Ford Focus TDCi Hatchback is a very good car. 200+ km/h cruising speed. 14-16+ km/l on the highway. Smooth 6-speed dual clutch transmission Dual AC. Prices are pretty good as they're currently on sale (again... for the 1,000,000th time).
The Tucson you can get at those prices is the 2.0 Gas 6AT. Not as impressive, technically as the TDCi, but the engine is economical for a gasoline crossover on the highway, thanks to the 6-speed, it drives well and looks good. Interior space is better (of course, it's a crossover!), but cargo space isn't that much bigger.
The answer? Bili ka nalang ng CR-V. Nyahahaha! But seriously... GH made some good suggestions. Shop around and see what's in your price range. Lots of good cars available.

Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
From what I'm following: a sensible vehicle is what you're after. Diesels would give you both better fuel consumption and power as they reach their torque at a low-RPM range. Hence perfect for everyday Metro Manila traffic.
Between the two, I'll choose a eVGT Hyundai Tucson over the TDCi Ford Focus just on these criteria:
1. Road height. Let's face it, when we drive sedans we worry about flooding deep down in our hearts. Seeing how I doubt you're flinging your car on corners (body roll problem), here in city driving, the higher the better is the rule
2. Age. The Ford Focus already has its successor down in the United States. It would only be a matter of time before it hits our shores. You can use this to your advantage to haggle bigger discounts but, after a year or two, I'm pretty sure you'll be regretting the purchase as the all new Focus looks better, meaner, and brought with it Ford's improving stature (much like Hyundai)
3. Presentability. Okay, for non-auto enthusiasts (this includes your everyday people.. yayas, security guards, bus boys, etc.) an SUV is already a status symbol that you're "better-off" than compact cars like Altis, Civic, etc. Besides. a Ford Focus makes it look like you're still studying at some prestigious school like ADMU and the car's a "gift" from your parents.
As alternatives: If you're around 20-30, you might want to look at the ASX for your everyday bit of fun. Or if you can afford it, the Forester 2.5XT would mostly satisfy most car-racer-made-father types. Be careful with the Suby's WRX-derived engine though, you'll be eating gas with those as they're limited to high octane fuels like Blaze, V-Power, etc.
But if you really can add a bit more hundred thousands to the price: Montero Sport GLS-V gets the vote. At 1.3M, you'd be hard fetched to get a diesel family car with honking good looks to back it up. And it's a proper SUV to boot.

I don't have a very good idea about the ford focus TDCi but the fact that it is used for racing speaks of its inherent ability to be reliable and dependable.
But if you have the money, I bet you would be better off with the Tucson CRDi because of the higher clearance, resale value and value for money.![]()
Fasten your seatbelt! Or else...Driven To Thrill!
Are you aiming for the 1.338M Tucson CRDi? Since you are a family man, I'd suggest this over the Focus. It has more of that all important interior room and luggage space. Higher ride height and ground clearance is also a boon for facing Metro Manila's bad roads and also for that occasional excursion up the rugged mountains.
^ Oo nga naman, para may variaty din sa gagamitin. Depends on the purspose of the trip.

very good answers i salute u guys. ok hyundai is the expert in diesel engines i agree. but it is more expensive in every way than the focus. is it also more "maiinit sa mata"?? is hyundai really nice? talagang japanese cars lang kami ever since.
i prefer low key. simple but comfortable. i will check out the mistubishi too but we had a lancer mx before and the insides were falling apart. super bulok talaga and mas mahal pa sa civic ko yun.
You can't say that it's "mainit sa mata". Look at Montero Sport for example.. there's alot of them being carnapped but if you total it with the entire units sold, it's still a small portion. Look for percentage (%) rather than the actual units being carnapped. Besides, carnapping would be the least of your worries if you're careful and park safely.
Personally, we used to stick to Japanese cars before. My car was supposed to be a Civic FD but I was gallant enough to go to the Hyundai camp (as well as paying the additional price difference between the two cars). So far, I'd say I'm pretty happy with it. If I was buying Hyundai in the 90s, maybe I'd definitely have second doubts, but right now? They seem to be Honda-like in my eyes.
Ford was... a nightmare post-Ondoy. Took me months to get our partially flooded Expeditions from the casas.
Don't blame it solely on Ford. Everyone had issues post-Ondoy. Some dealerships still have flooded cars left over from them. A lot of people waited up to half a year to get their cars back from the dealerships.
Also, the Expedition is made in the USA. Parts are always going to take longer than the locally assembled Focus.

Carnapping shouldn't be a big concern with a modern car with a security chip in the ignition... as long as you avoid dangerous roads and situations. (Don't go looking for an ATM on a dark street at midnight or joyriding out in the middle of nowhere at 3am...)
If flooding is a concern, the Tucson is better than the Focus, since the intake is at hood level. But it's not perfect. None of these crossovers were designed for deep water fording, and the electronics are not adequately shielded if you have to cross deep floods. If you're really worried about floods, you'll be buying an Isuzu Crosswind.

The Tucson is better. Whether it's 200k-300k better is up to you, it's your money. And that's the long and short of it. Both companies offer test drives. Whichever car strikes your fancy better should be the winner.
Personally, I fancy the top-end Tucson with the dual sunroofs... but that's 1.7m...![]()
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
surprise surprise. i visited hyundai dealer. they have no tucson diesel, they wont say when they will have one, they wont give test drives. they have just lost their sale.
i am now forced to look at the tucson 2.0 gls 4x2 theta 2 (petrol engine) versus the ford focus.
now they are evenly priced just 20K difference i think. which do i choose now the diesel or the gas engine?
