If you're going to use it off-road, the Fortuner has the advantage.
It's dual range, decent angles (approach, breakover, departure), some underbody armor (they seem flimsy but at least there are some), and solid rear axle.
Hilux upgrades will work on it as well.

For true off roading the Fortuner wins with solid axle rear and a body on ladder frame chassis. The Santa Fe is a crossover SUV based on the Sonata using an independent rear suspension better suited on roads and not rock crawling, mudding, or any true off road situations. Off road is one of those situations where a solid axle is better than an independent one.

Fortuner is a truck in literal terms. It's a body on ladder vehicle hence it's better for off-road stuff.
SantaFe is a crossover SUV hence the monocoque body, comfortable sedan ride and handling and not so big tires. It can be used for hauling, maybe towing too (since it's got a high torque engine on the CRDI version) light off-road stuff (accdg to the manual) but definitely not Range Rover level off-roading.

konti lang daw diff eh, may nag-kwento lang na bigshot. hehehe. Pwede na ata mag-order ngayon thru HARI. They are getting ready for the Veracruz i think.
BTW, pwede pala i-chip yung ECU ng SF CRDi, from 150hp/335Nm, magiging 180Hp/395Nm (dyno tested yun for sure), all from a teeny tiny programmed Flash ROM chip. all else, stock. Mas titipid pa ang consumption (well, accdg to the data).
yun lang, di ko pa alam magkano yung chip na yun.
