2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI vs. Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X

It didn't take long for Japan's journalists to get the new STI and EVO X side by side, and the results are now officially in. Tsukuba circuit regulars Kazuo Shimizu and Manabu Kawaguchi spent an afternoon thrashing around the notoriously twisty short circuit just north of Tokyo and here (drum roll please) are the best times they could ring out of the AWD rivals:

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X : 1:06:46

Subaru Impreza WRX STI : 1:05:95

So there you have it. The new engine placed further forward in the engine bay of the EVO X than in the EVO IX has indeed proven to be a handicap, while the STI's "wheel at each corner" longer wheelbase plus new double wishbone rear suspension has proved its worth.

Neither car is quite as quick as its immediate ancestor though. Check out this 15 year rivalry of the EVO vs the STI as recorded at Tsukuba:

Good win for the STi... too bad Mitsubishi turned the wick down on this EVO...

I guess the switch in focus towards the hatchback model is paying dividends... I think Subaru has bolstered its chances at winning the WRC next year.

actually i love both cars Niky, i was choosing between WRX and Evo7 then, i just find Subbie more livable as a daily drive. but that Mitsu still has a special place in my heart....and in my garage.

This time around, it seems like the Evo X is the more livable of the two cars. The Best Motoring test of the SST around town has me convinced! Let's say it has 90% of the speed of the STI and the previous Evo, but thanks to the fully automatic mode via SST it's infinitely more survivable through traffic.

they are making this Evo X a more family-man's car .i heard Emperor is set to have unit this January.

Bat ba kinocompare pa ang dalawangg yan eh kitang-kita naman kung sino ang mananalo... EVO, EVO, EVO X!!! Stock pa lang ng Evo X titihaya na ang Impreza WRX

I've never been a Subaru fan eversince they were born... another factor. ^^

tama kayo titihaya ang WRX pero hindi ang STi
