    Hi Guys,
I would like to ask for your advises on which car to buy for my Brother.
He is still a new driver so it would be better to have an A/T vehicle.
We are already considering the following:

    Civic FD
    Altis
    2nd Gen Vios 1.3 or 1.5
    1st Gen Yaris

Though we prefer the FD since we own an FD before, he might have a hard time with the clearance of the FD since it is quite wide.
I'm still open for other suggestions though. Hope to have your inputs on this.
    Thank you!

if you want a smaller car, get an older altis, or the vioses / yarises.

none of my kakilalas who started out with AT, ever learned to drive MT afterward.
i suggest start with MT first. it's very easy to do AT, once one learns MT. he can even alternate.

some people, however, say AT na lang, because MTs are becoming obsolete.

    it's your call, po.

    This is easy.

    1. You have a budget that could buy a ~5 year old car. This is the usual cycle for people to get a new car. A well maintained 5 year-old car still looks and runs like a new one.
    2. You have a list of cars, all these are good cars, you can't go wrong with these. In addition, you might want to consider 2010/11 City.
    3. AT or MT is irrelevant, he'd learn both anyway. Condition of the car, since pre-owned, is more important.

I'd say, shop around based on your list. Buy the best conditioned car you can find within your budget.

agree on the vios. mas madali ang handling. mas maliit ng onti, fuel efficient, plenty of parts.

You may want to look at other car manufacturers...

Older Toyota cars only had an AT option for their top of the line models...

You might get a newer car if you look at Hyundai models... (although resale value will suffer when its time for you to upgrade)

IMO, no need for him to learn manual! Cars of the future might not even need drivers

an i10 would also be a fit here. much smaller though, but easier to drive.

For flooding, what you need is a car with high ground clearance and air intake placement, and not necessarily a manual.

For a first timer, I'd suggest a manual diesel Adventure or Innova. When I was a newbie driver, I had an easier time with diesel AUVs than subcompact sedans. They're easier to park due to lack of a trunk. Higher ride height means you get a better view of the road. A diesel's clutch is also easier to modulate and much less likely to stall with an abrubt release or when negotiating inclines.

    diesels usually have larger torque.
this translates to less engine deaths (with MTs).

Are size and transmission your only considerations? Any target range for gas mileage?

    Get a Crosswind.

If he has to drive through the flooded streets around UST, a Sportivo or XUV is the most practical choice secondhand. Also dirt cheap to maintain (except for the AC).

Not sure about the traffic conditions in your area but in constant Metro Manila traffic, the typical 1.5A/T only gets a gas mileage at the vicinity of 8km/L. The Vios 1.3A/T isn't that much better either.

The traffic in our area maybe you could consider light to moderate. Since we can have an average speed of 40kph, (distance/time) computation. Yan lang din basis since i almost have same route with my brother,.

You live in the province, yes? I got 12 km/L in mixed provincial driving with a Vios 1.3E AT before.

Changing the list to the following:

    Vios 1.3/1.5 AT
    Yaris 1.5AT
    Swift 1.5AT

    Criteria would be:
Fun to Drive, Fuel Efficient, Comfort (Both driver and Front Passenger), Ease of Maintenance.
    Thank you.

rear passenger comfort? i'd scratch the swift off. it's too cramped behind the driver, for adults. for small humans and grocery bags, it's ok, however.
i don't know about you, but... i find the yaris easier to get in and out of.. yumuyuko ako pagpasok ng vios, hindi masyadong yumuyuko pag yaris. and i think i feel a wee bit more space in the yaris than the vios.
i do a lot of "fit me" in the showrooms...

i have a wigo AT. and it's not really built for "bigger men" as me... uncomfortable for the driver in traffic after an hour or so.. cramped legs.. otherwise, it's ok. but the rear passengers have no trouble. if you stretch your budget, you might score on this.
