Hi! First off, sorry, this might be a bit off topic but it seems my account is unable to post in other parts of the forum. Anyway, I currently have a 2010 Civic, but I am planning on purchasing a new vehicle in the next 6 months. I need suggestions with regards to what to get. I'm looking at getting a crossover or a small-ish SUV that will primarily be used for city driving but it may be used for an occasional long drive. I don't really want a large SUV like the Chevy Trailblazer or the Nissan Terra. I've already had the chance to drive a Trailblazer and it feels far too big for city driving.

Can anyone give me suggestions based on experience and the criteria below?

    1. Good to Great Fuel Economy / Consumption (Gas is getting pretty expensive, and I'm often stuck in traffic. It would be great if you can share your experience and a bit of data.)
    2. Stable and feels solid. (I've been driving a Civic since I started, would love to have the same stable feeling.)
    3. Great After Sales and Affordable PMS (I've been wondering about getting a Tucson but I hear terrible things about HARI. Ugh)

Models I'm no longer considering: Forester (family already owns one), HRV (Kind of feels like a step down from my Civic), Nissan Juke (Because it's too trendy. LOL)

    Thank you!

p.s. Forgot to mention that I'm a female driver. Lol. I dunno if it's important but yeah. And I don't mind a 7 seater but 5 is okay given that the vehicle is for my personal use (and my little sister who might borrow it from me from time to time).

Yes, I read about the not so great feedback on the fuel consumption... I don't mind the 7 seats, although I don't have much need for it to be honest.

    Thank you for these suggestions.

I haven't checked the Cx-5. I'll look it up! How is the after sales of Mazda? I'm afraid I'm not very familiar with their services thus the hesitation.

With regards to the XV. How is the fuel economy with regards to city driving? My Dad's not a big fan of the Forester with regards to fuel consumption.

I was actually at the Nissan showroom in BGC yesterday. And the X-trail seems interesting but i've heard that it isn't very fuel efficient?

VW Tiguan - yes, I've been looking at this one. I'm a little intimidated with the after sales though. But will definitely drop by a showroom to test drive.

How about a diesel wagon? VW is still selling its remaining inventory of the Golf GTS wagon.

To be perfectly honest, I have not considered the Golf. But will check it out when I check the Tiguan!

The new Tiguan comes with a 1.4L turbo gas engine only. The Golf GTS wagon comes with a 2.0L turbo diesel engine. Both vehicles are based off the same VW MQB platform.

She's looking for a crossover or SUV ... The Suzuki Vitara is good although you might not warm up to the interior ... The smallest one that would fit your criteria would be the Subaru XV ... Hyundai Kona is worth a look but then again it's a Hyundai ... Honda CR-V 1.6 diesel would be your best option though ... Diesel, great interior, reliable, good brand ...

Then the CX-5 or CR-V will also do. This CX-5 should feel stable and well planted. Our moderator also had a good ride on it on the track. He should be able to compare the two as he owns a CR-V.

Oh, what's wrong with the Vitara's interiors? I haven't seen it yet. Hmm.. I'm seriously considering the XV just because of the ground clearance. Lol. I thought about the Kona and the Tucson. Is it worth risking it despite the terrible after sales feedback?

Yeah, my dad thinks the CR-V is a pretty good choice. I'll prolly drop by a showroom soon to check it out.

    Thank you!

    1. Mazda 6 fuel consumption, worst is 9 km/L in a standstill traffic. Highway driving is 23 km/L running at 83 kph using cruise control. If you have a lead foot, 15 km/L should satisfy your need for speed.

    2. I believe this car is stable and feels solid. Our moderator, *jut703, used this car in Tarlac Circuit Hill and made good time of 1:13 with three passengers. Attached is the picture of the circuit for you to see how that guy managed to do it with those twisting roads.

    3. PMS is absolutely free for three (3) years, and that includes lubricating oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, etc. After sales concern, joining a group should help you. Basic oil change and other related items shouldn't cost much.

The free three (3) year PMS sounds very tempting and the fuel consumption is not bad! I'll look it up along with the CX-5. Thank you for this detailed and informative response! :D

    Welcome to the forum!

Easily, I think the CRV diesel fits your needs perfectly.

    1. It's very fuel efficient (9-11 km/L in city driving, over 15 km/L in highway driving) plus diesel is much cheaper than gasoline. A big plus is that for city driving, the diesel feels very torquey and actually feels peppier than the gas engine at low speeds.

    2. I also have a Civic (2017) and I can tell you that my CRV is far more comfortable and feels very solid even with the awful roads we have in the metro. I would go as far as saying that it's the most comfortable car you can buy for under 2M.

    3. PMS has been surprisingly affordable for our Hondas. I had the impression that it had expensive PMS, but my Civic is actually cheaper to maintain than my previous Toyota Altis. This is because Honda only requires maintenance every 10,000 km vs Toyota's 5,000 km interval.

You mentioned that cheaper CUVs feel like a step down, and I agree. The HRV feels nowhere as premium as the CRV, and cheaper options like the Juke and Vitara feel even more low-rent.

You also mentioned that you want a car that doesn't feel bulky to drive. In all honesty, the CRV drives like a taller, softer, more comfortable Civic - so it's very nimble for its size. It has the same interior space as a bigger SUV like a Montero or MUX but is much easier to drive around the narrow roads of the metro.

Good luck with the car shopping!

For a CUV, I would recommend either a CX5 (friend owns one) or the Xtrail TOTL as alternatives if you are looking at the CRV.

For the SUV side, the Montero still has the tightest turning radius so in terms of weaving in and out of traffic, it is the easiest to maneuver for me. It feels the shortest of the bunch to handle. =)

Compact CUV, since Juke is out of the Question, the BRV technically has better interior space compared to the Juke. It's actually tight when you have 6ft tall passengers in the 2nd row. So I personally would not recommend the Juke to haul a family of 4 if the kids are teenagers already. Or you are planning to drive your parents around.

Wagon Type - Maybe the Toyota Rush. Practically an Avanza but has "better" looks. Engine has the same 1.5 Engine in the Vios and Avanza. You'd have the kid booster seats in the back for additional 2 seats during an emergency trip but not for long haul. If you want something with more legroom enough for all three rows, the Mobilio and Expander actually have better legroom. I haven't managed to test drive the Expander (just sat in the display unit in MMPC.. hehe!), but I have heard good things about the Mobilio being driven up Tagaytay at least and it didn't struggle even when fully loaded.

I don't have recommendation from Peugeot or Volkswagen since I've never really looked at them because of the price premium of being imported here while not through an ASEAN channel for the tax discounts. hehe!

    Good luck in shopping. =)
