I am looking to buy a 2nd hand suv/cuv, budget is up to 600k max, 2nd car sya I still have a sedan (civic sir). In that price range mga nakikita ko sa sulit mga crv, tucson, sportage, escape, xtrail, ang pasok sa budget....

So which is better buy.... Criteria

    1. Fuel consumption - cost of using
    2. Durability/maintenance - cost of maintenance

Alin ba talagamas practical... Diesel or gas engine? If diesel I get the a/t butif gas baka m/t na lag para pataas km/l

    2. ill go with the japanese IMHO, nothing against american and korean made

The most practical choice for me would be the Sportage or Tucson CRDi. You get a torquey diesel engine with thrifty fuel consumption. Its not as desirable as the others in terms of aesthetics or performance though. Maintenance cost is also a few thousand more expensive than the gasoline powered ones per routine maintenance session.

What would you usually carry or bring in this car, by the way?

Im getting 7-8 km/L city driving and 9-9.5 km/L highway with my X-Trail.

    I can make 8KM/L mix driving in my 4WD A/T 2.0L Grand Vitara. 9.5KM/L on Hi-way.

thanks mga sir, keep on coming...

this will be used mostly as a weekend / out of town car, I just used the sedan as the daily driven.

yup I like the tucson and sportage to crdi engine sa mahal ng gas ngaun pataas pa ng pataas but I heard mas mahal and maintenance ng ganitong eninge no idea never owned a diesel... how about parts di ba mahirap hanapin? BTW Im from Batangas...

the Pajero and everest is a good alternative as well... thanks

They use more motor oil than gasoline engines, and engine parts are usually more expensive . But then if you take good care of your car, you will most likely not have to worry about engine parts failing till you reach very well past 100tkms. The additional maintenance cost is actually quite negligible as you do maintenance only around twice a year.

Old school diesels are cheaper to maintain than modern diesels with much cheaper parts, and can be serviced by pretty much any mechanic around the block. They are also more capable of handling abuse, neglect and dirty fuel. For your budget you may consider a 1st gen Everest or a Starex GRX (both 2004-2007). Both have old school turbo intercooler engines and the Starex GRX has CRDi variants available as well. The Pajero Fieldmaster is within your budget as well but is much older than the Starex and Everest with the same price range.
