yes. i think that the best bang for the buck HUs now are pioneers.. the newer models are IPOD ready na and they have almost all features that you need.
alpines are also within the feature and functionality of pioneers but i think they are more expensive.
sony xplods are also fast catching up, even in the price range.

i'll go for pioneer esp the new model which is the DEH-5050
sulit sa price nya... with usb na...
ganda din ng alpine medyo pricey nga lang.
but, if budget is not a problem then i suggest you
get the alpine 9887.

I have installed in my toycar is a JVC DVD HU. Ipod ready, USB port, MMC reader. Plays all formats (mp3, cd audio, wma etc. ) Downside is that I still do not have an LCD display. Pag-iiponan ko pa muna. Butas pa bulsa ko ngayon.

+1. These things are also insanely adjustable (time alignment anyone?), so you can tweak to your heart's content.
Pioneer's trumpcard is connectivity, though. Its 2008 lineup of 1-DIN head units has four of them that are USB-capable out of the box.
They also sound pretty good If money is no object and you want the best 1-DIN Pioneer HU you can buy locally, go look for the P80RS
