Thanks for the tip. I'm just a bit scared that when you rinse it , the residue would flow down to the paint. Would a thorough rinse secure the safety of the paint?

yespo. a thorough rinse. rinsing liberally with water, should wash down everything before they can start affecting the paint or the metal.
