i use mothers clay bar and here's what i do: i usually cut one bar in halves and use 1/2 and save the other half for later use... i then make ball out of it and press it thin like a burger patty and spray about 2' x 2' panel with the QD spray (showtime) and slide the clay left-right, up-down without any pressure, i just let it slide until it smoothly sliding, then fold it and make a ball again and thin patty-like... when i see the clay becomes rough or it does not smoothly slide, then that's the time you discard it... also when you drop the clay, don't use it anymore as this might scratch the surface of the car... 1 bar of new clay is more than enough for 3 ave size car (sedan), but on my SUV, i always use a new half every 6 months and discard it after...
