Power born from passion: the new Audi TT Coupe

Audi has issued the following press release:

A cult car, an icon – the Audi TT, launched in the autumn of 1998 – took the sports coupé segment by storm and sharpened the brand profile. Now the second generation of this successful model is making its debut. The new
TT Coupé is even more dynamic than its predecessor– in terms of its design, its drivetrain, and its running gear.

The very architecture of the new Audi TT Coupé embodies the style, stability and power of a pure driving machine. The bullish stance of the base body and the low, narrow styling of the greenhouse together form a sculpture of simple, unfussy lines. The Audi design team has lovingly adopted and enhanced the visual code – the motif of circles and domes – of the predecessor model. The new TT appears more stretched, and even at a standstill seems to be striving to move forward; taut panels emphasise the impression of dynamic movement. The new TT is 137 mm longer than its predecessor at 4,178 mm, and 78 mm wider at 1,842 mm.

The body is constructed in the ASF Space Frame design developed by Audi and consists of aluminium and steel. This is the first time that it has combined different materials alongside each other. 69 percent of the superstructure is made of aluminium. The steel components making up the remaining 31 percent are to be found at the rear end, so as to ensure balanced distribution of the axle loads. To improve downforce, a spoiler is extended from the tailgate when the vehicle reaches a speed of 120 km/h.

The new Audi TT, like its predecessor, is initially available as a 2 + 2-seater coupé; the separate roadster model is scheduled for later launch. The basic luggage capacity of the easily accessible boot, under its large-format lid, is 290 litres. This capacity can be increased to 700 litres by folding down the rear seat backs. The sports seats provide outstanding side restraint. There is a choice of three different leathers for the covers.

The cockpit is oriented strictly to the driver and is perfectly ergonomic in design. It embodies the classic circles motif of the TT in a number of ways, such as in the three centre air vents.

Two powerful petrol engines are available to power the car. The 2.0l turbocharged four-cylinder TFSI unit featuring FSI direct injection develops 147 kW (200 bhp). With a six-speed manual gearbox, it accelerates the TT to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds, reaching a top speed of 240 km/h. The sonorous-sounding, naturally aspirated 3.2-litre V6 engine develops 184 kW (250 bhp), accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and reaching a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically governed).

Both engines are equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. On request they can be combined with the dynamic S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Whereas the four-cylinder engine comes with front-wheel drive, the V6 distributes its power across both axles by way of the quattro permanent four-wheel drive system – an exclusive technology feature in the sports coupé segment.

The Audi dynamic suspension was newly developed and tuned for the TT Coupé. One of its hallmarks is its self-steering behaviour right up to the handling limits, which ranges from neutral to light understeer. This sporty orientation produces driving fun, agility and supreme handling characteristics.

The track enlargement, with larger wheels ranging from 16 to 19 inches in size, and extensive changes in the area of elastokinematics were key areas of the developers’ work. The new multi-link rear suspension ensures optimum driving dynamics at a sports car level.

The high-tech Audi magnetic ride damper system is available as an option. In this system, tiny magnetic particles circulate in the oil inside the shock absorbers. When a voltage is applied to them, they alter the damping characteristics within milliseconds. This adaptive system simultaneously ensures high levels of ride comfort and thoroughly sporty dynamism, according to the specific driving scenario and the preferences of the driver.

The standard features of the new Audi TT include an automatic air conditioning system and a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel. The latter is not only entirely suitable for the sports car but also makes it easier to get in and out. The air vents, steering wheel spokes and many of the controls are finished in an aluminium look.

With regard to options, customers can choose from a variety of high-tech solutions, including the adaptive light dynamic cornering light system and the Audi parking system which aids parking.

The new TT marks the premiere of a new generation of audio systems. It is characterised by state-of-the-art reception and playback technology and intuitive user control. Six so-called softkeys control a variety of functions depending on which menu is selected. The chorus radio system with single CD drive comes as standard. A Bluetooth interface is available for mobile phones. The telephone function can be operated via the MMI, the multifunction steering wheel and by speech control. The operator control for the optional navigation system takes its cues from the exemplary MMI system familiar from the Audi A6, A8 and Q7 model series.

PRESS RELEASE FROM AUDI / PGA CARS:

The New Audi TT-Coupe 2.0 TFSI

“Technology has never been more ***y”

The new Audi TT has finally shed its skin-deep beauty thanks to advancements made in driving dynamics, power-train refinement and of course, the beautiful and iconic, 1920’s Bauhaus-inspired motorized masterpiece first unveiled in 1998 to an astonished and adoring public.

The fastback coupe, one of the best selling sportscars ever produced looks more purposeful, sporty and ***y, but has also grown roomier and more practical inside. The wheels have been pushed further out into the corners, helping increase interior space and aiding driving dynamics. It has grown slightly, being 137mm longer and 78mm wider but retains the same height for the compact feel. Most promising is an increase of 75mm of interior space to the benefit of rear passengers.

The new platform is built from 69% aluminum and 31% high-strength steel. It boasts a stiffer and lighter chassis, up 50% from the original thanks to the Audi aluminum space-frame chassis (ASF), a technology pioneered and developed by Audi in the early 1990’s. If it were built on an all-steel platform, the TT would weigh in 48% heavier than it is now. Thanks to the stiffer and lighter platform, driving dynamics have turned up to 11, offering more space and pace with a minimal overall weight gain. The front-drive TFSI TT weighs in at 1260 kilograms, very light considering all the safety equipment installed. The optional S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox adds a measly 20 kilograms but rewards with a smoother, more seamless drive coupled with a quicker sprint to 100kmh, 6.4 seconds versus the regular 6-speed gearbox’s 6.6. The S-Tronic shifts gears in just 0.2 seconds with no perceptible loss in forward momentum, thanks to twin output shafts carrying the gearsets. One can change gears in the S-Tronic equipped models either via tugging the shift lever or pulling on the paddles behind the steering wheel with no clutch pedal, further reducing driving effort and offering the ease of use of a regular automatic without sacrificing performance. The perfect compromise for the driver seeking a practical 2+2 sports car for the daily commute as well as a fun plaything for the weekend jaunt. 50:50 folding rear seats increase luggage capacity and overall practicality.

Macpherson strut front-suspension and a new 4-link rear ensure unsurpassed traction and stability under hard acceleration, cornering and braking on all types of road surface conditions. For added high-speed stability, there’s an electronically activated rear spoiler that pops up automatically above 120kmh and retracts below 80kmh to tame the beautiful Bauhaus masterpiece.

As an added treat to technology fans, Audi’s new Magnetic Ride / Adaptive Damping System will be an option for the serious, discerning enthusiast as well as for those who want an extra smooth ride and comfort. Magneto-rheological dampers are filled with microscopic magnetic particles within the damper fluid. When subjected to an magneto-electronic field / charge, the dampers can soften or stiffen to help suit the driving style and road conditions.

A twin-cam 16 valve 2.0 liter turbocharged TFSI (turbocharged fuel stratified injection; Audi-speak for gasoline direct injection) engine provides an ample 200HP and 280 newton-meters of torque, giving the TT crisp and immediate response, more power and immediate grunt off the line and out of the tightest of corners, and combined with the show-stopping looks, means its equally capable on the highways, byways and the very fashionable high-street of Metro Manila’s urban night spots. Coupled with adjustable valve timing on the intake side and electronic drive-by-wire system, the ramp up in power is smooth, instantaneous and cuts fuel consumption by an estimated 15% from a comparable 2-liter engine with indirect port fuel injection making similar power. Audi has tested this technology in their R8 Le Mans race car, having won the French Classic race 5-times on the trot from 2000 to 2005, excluding 2002 where an R8 based Bentley racer won.

With fuel consumption of 13 kilometers per liter in combined city and highway driving, who says sports cars should be uncouth and gluttonous with our natural resources? The 2.0 liter TFSI engine has been awarded Engine of the Year two years running, in 2005 and 2006 by a jury of international experts composed of the motoring media, engineers and auto industry experts worldwide. This is the way of the future, pioneered by Audi in series production.

Inside, a flat-bottomed race-car inspired steering wheel, copied from the R8 and R10 Le Mans racers, with optional multi-function buttons for the cruise control, audio system and sat-nav greets the driver, wrapped in soft Nappa leather and/or Alcantara. The rich leather-covered RECARO sports seats, also covered in ultra-soft Nappa leather feel smooth and gentle to your backside, ensuring a long drive will be as pleasant as ever. The interior is themed like a cockpit with controls smoothly and gently wrapping around the driver for added ease and ergonomics. The circular

theme from the previous generation TT continues in the newer model giving a sense of familiarity to those familiar with the iconic sports coupe. It is simpler, more classy and less cluttered than before.

The new overall shape is more pleasing, with minimal body lines, is less polarizing yet retains the visual drama of the original, and with optional wheels available up to 19’ inch in diameter plus a plethora of other accessories to be released soon, the new TT promises dashing good looks coupled with elevated and sharpened driving dynamics in a package that promises to be less harmful than its predecessor to the environment and more practical than ever.

Of course no Audi is complete without a long list of safety equipment: multiple front and side airbags, ESP stability control Version 8.0, ABS-EBD brakes with emergency brake assist and the Quattro all-wheel drive system fitted as standard on the V6 model. The V6 variant in 3.2 liter 4-cam 24-valve guise will offer more power and performance by way of the Quattro AWD system and 250HP as well as 320 newton-meters of torque.

All that power, innovation, performance, exclusivity, sophistication and character. A real thing of beauty.
