i do not think i would like to re-use that damaged thermostat anymore, even if i cleaned it.
as to flush out rust, i think it's just a matter of opening the drain plug at the base of the radiator and wait for all the water to drain out. some say it would be better while the engine is still hot.. daw.. then, you close the drain hole and pour in your choice of coolant.
