VW will always be priced a little higher but having owned one, I think the price justifies the quality and safety measures it has. I owned a Tiguan in the US and had an accident. Flipped the car over at 65MPH, all 3 of us came out of the car with no scratches at all. All side curtain airbags deployed. I had the panoramic moonroof and that didn't even break. Hazzards automatically turned on, doors unlocked and the engine off. The car was declared a total by the insurance company.

I drove my brother's VW 2.0 gas turbo tfsi Passat yesterday. I'm impressed. I didn't realize it was THAT powerful. I was thinking blah 220hp only on a mid size frame. My views changed instantly when I put it in sport mode. This thing charges hard and handles very well. Much faster than a v6 Camry or accord. The torque just hits you and the gear changes are rapid fire. Am really really really impressed. And the build quality is second to none.

Please note that I had just finished driving my newly chipped LC200 that evening and the mustang earlier in the day. So the feeling of speed and power was fresh and I had a very serious point of comparison. These cars don't get the attention that they should be getting. Seriously turbo power (while down on the v6 competition on paper) will wipe the floor with the competition due to the torque (from 1500 rpm) and that lightning quick transmission. The body is lightweight as well. Transmission programming is spot on (in manual mode it upshifts at the redline instead of holding the damn gear).

The trim level was extremely well appointed. Am now thinking of replacing my Jazz with the Golf GTi (same engine).

As another point of comparison this felt faster than the wrx that I thrashed the other day along white plains. Maybe the transmission? I know the wrx has more power but this just felt faster. Maybe the stopwatch will prove me wrong. But it's the visceral feeling that counts for me rather than just pure numbers.

*EQAddict - is it worth the 2.3M VW-PH is asking for the Passt 2.0 TFSI? I think you had a really great time with it.

In as much as I want to get a Passat TFSI or Golf GTi, the price is out of my range. We are more thinking of getting the new Jetta TDI DSG. Test drove the 2.0L TDI a week ago and it is a nice car. It is bigger than most other compacts, much more like old midsize cars. The DSG tranny felt nice and not as clanky as my Fiesta. You are right about the build quality. These VW cars feel solid and sturdy.

VW-PH only had me drove it around BGC. It would have been better to have brought to SLEX or Skyway where I could drive it the way I drive daily.

I think if you are shopping in this price range (totl camry or accord) and are hell bent on an executive sedan, then the Passat should be on your list especially if performance is a priority.

I really dont think the v6 competition can beat the turbo 4 banger performance . The engine and transmission combo is just really good.

Its really a premium car at a not premium price.

*EQAddict - how does the Passat TFSI to the previous generation Legacy GT turbo? Both have 4-banger turbo engines but the Legacy GT has AWD. Subaru should have brought the new Legacy with the 2.0L turbo engine of the WRX.

It feels much faster because full torque is at 1500 rpm and the tranny is rapid fire fast. It loses some grip in first gear and thats where the awd of subaru will show its advantage.

But im 100% sure that even when i chipped, tuned and changed my downpipes in my legacy, that this passat is still faster in acceleration. And you can really feel it.

Well, that VW engine paired with the quick DSG tranny is making wonders with the Golf GTi. So, the same is expected when placed in a well-balanced and sporty midsize car like the Passat. The EUDM Jetta GLi is also a monster compact as it sports the same engine and tranny combo. VW does share its platforms with Audi and Audi cars are no slouch in terms of performance.

Some European cars tend to understate their hp to lower insurance costs. The BMW 2.0T makes 240hp at the wheels despite claiming 240hp at the crank.

I think this will rival the 3-series and C class more than the camry and accord. Its a more spacious alternative. At P2.7m its straight against a BMW 318d which is slower and smaller.

The Passat Highline model has a MSRP of 2.25M while the Business Edition is at 2.75M. VW-PH offers a 150k discount on the Highline model and thus compete with V6 models of the Accord, Camry, and Legacy. I assume a bigger discount is offered on the Business Edition model. The biggest discount offered is on the Touareg at 400k, bringing down the price to 3.9M which is really a bargain compared to its sibling, Audi Q7, priced at 6M+.

I test drove the golf gti . I find it kinda bare for the price and the seat fabric as well as seat controls (manual rotary) arent to my liking. I can confirm that it does NOT feel as powerful as the passat. And it feels a whole lot less premium. The only advantage it has is it has paddle shifters and is a smaller car to position. Other than that i would go with the passat.

The interior feels disappointing for a 2.3m car.

is the tiguan (currently with a massive discount 250k daw) still a good deal despite the entry of newer diesel PPVs? after discount, the price would be about 1.850k ...

The Tiguan is a CUV like the CRV, CX-5, Forester, and RAV4. I am not sure if the Euro-quality and turbo diesel engine offer a premium over the much cheaper competition.

What's the regular price for non-ALI/Ayala Corp. employees, if anyone knows? But, if this is not available in the PH market, maybe it isn't sold in any of the VW dealerships.

We got the black one with 17" rims for 950k (Highline). Still a bargain for its price and features. I like your interiors better as it is darker. Ours came with beige interiors.

VW-PH might be fielding the model until all LOI (pre-order) units were delivered to their respective owners (employees of Ayala-owned companies). The Trendline model (with 16" steel rims), same as above, is priced around 1.3M. The Highline model (with 17" rims) is priced around 1.4M. These models come with the small 1.6L CRDI engine (rated at 105hp * 4400 rpm, 250Nm * 1500 rpm). It comes with a 7-speed DSG (dual clutch) tranny.

These models are assembled in Mexico using parts from Germany. They were supposed to fill the requirement of VW vehicles for Turkey. Late last year, VW decided to pull them out of the Turkey market. They were offered to Ayala employees last January with interested employees signing an LOI to reserve a unit (Trendline or Highline)

The current Jetta models available to the public are the Jetta 1.4L DSG turbo gas (same engine as the Golf 1.4T) at just over 1.3M and the Jetta 2.0 TDI DSG at around 1.5M.

The Jetta 1.6L TDI DSG comes in two trims; Trendline and Highline. Based on what the VW agents told us, the Trendline is offered in 3 colors - white, black, silver. The Highline is offered in black, white, and blue. Most of the units were reserved thru a letter of intent and as part of Ayala employees' car discount benefit. VW Shangrila Makati is now using black Jetta Trendline models as part of their car fleet together with the midsize Passat.

The 1.6L turbo diesel engine is rated at 105hp * 4400 rpm, 250Nm * 1500 rpm paired with a 7-speed DSG (dual clutch) transmission. It is quite frugal on fuel and the ride is quite good (much better than Asian compacts).

Hindi ko din alam ang specs kasi walang brochure o manual na binigay si VW. :twak:

Pero from local unit na Jetta, aside from the engine 1.6 tdi, it comes with auto-dual aircon, rain sensing wipers, auto headlight, better head unit. Yan yun mga napansin ko

Hanapin ko nga yung brochures na bigay sa amin dati. PDF format nga lang bigay sa amin. We did receive an owner's manual when the car was delivered (electronic copy in CD).

Below are some of the features of the Jetta 1.6L TDI DSG Highline trim (Black Pearl color) we got last July.

    17" VW multi-spoke mags with 225/45/R17 tires
Beige interiors and trims (carpet and mats)
    Leather seats (beige color)
    Dark glossy dashboard trims
Touch screen Headunit with Bluetooth, MP3, USB (not DVD)
Auto climate control Dual aircon with rear vents
Euro style headlight switches with Auto option (similar as those on Ford, Volvo, etc.)
Integrated proximity sensors (front and rear) - can be switched on/off, alerts displayed on head unit when switched on
Automatic folding side mirrors (controls integrated with side mirror control knob)
    Rain sensing wipers

Back in February, we were told that the Highline trim comes with a sunroof. A few months later, they said no more sunroof option. A great bargain for the price we got it, not to mention the benefits of the frugal 1.6L turbo diesel engine.
