I'm not a girl but my 2 cents:

Of course you'll always have the gold diggers who'll go for guys in nice cars, without caring what the guys in the car look like or are like...those are the girls most guys try to avoid anyway ...

But in GENERAL...

Lets see...I think you can split this up into 2 age groups. The younger generation (16 - early 20's) and the more mature generation (20 somethings and up)

The younger generation probably care a little about the car a guy drives. Why?

Well, they have a reputation to protect...
they need the ego boost knowing their girlfriends get a little jealous of them because their man is hot and has a hot car...
they''ll probably care that they arrive at their destination in style
nice car = rich guy = cool places to go, people to see, etc
over all shallower world view...comes with the inexperience.
I can go on and on ... but mostly it is because they'll see that guy with the nice car as a good catch because he represents status.

(this is not set in stone, so I don't mean to infer that ALL younger girls feel this way)

Now for the more mature age group, I think the majority of them have outgrown the shallow reasons...but now other things kick in.

A guy who drives a nice car exudes an aura of success. If you're a marriage age woman looking for stability in her life, or at least someone who deserves her considering what she's accomplished then you'll look more towards men like that, right? There are nice guys who drive ratty cars, and nice guys who drive nice cars. So the nice ones who drive nice cars are good catches because they are nice AND successful. Wouldn't a woman be inherently attracted to those kinds of guys? It's a matter of self preservation and practical thinking, those men are more in a position to give them what they need in terms of future stability in their lives. So isn't it just common sense that women will be attracted to guys in nice cars?

Once again, this is not set in stone, just a generalization. I'm sure there are plenty of women out there who will judge a guy based on his personality and principles, but for her to judge him, she has to notice him first. The nice car helps. =)

Its not just the car. Its what the car implies. An ugly guy who owns (not just borrows and drives) expensive cars sends signals to women that he is financially stable. He attracts women seeking material comfort. And we all know there are many women in our society seeking material comfort. The rich men provide the house, cars, shopping money...the women provide the *** and companionship.

Women who are already materially comfortable (own business, lucrative career, rich family) are usually not attracted to the ugly-guy-nice-car type. They are attracted to good looks.

Observe. Many women (young or old) who make their own money are attracted to good looking men with little or no net worth. The women provide the material stuff, the men provide the *** and companionship.

There are men who make a career out of seeking and attaching themselves to women with money. Think Philip Salvador.

Funny...

Women in our society are more ambitious, money/success-oriented than previous generations. But instead of attracting decent, hardworking men, they end up attracting good looking parasites.

got my license when i was 18. got my first car right after i got my license. it was an '86 corolla(handed to me by my uncle). pretty banged up. attending school full time and working part time bagging groceries were the reasons i was too broke to get a more decent car. it would leak water inside during rain, but it was the most memorable car i've ever owned. i've had my wildest s** in the front and back seats and on the hood of the car :naughty:
