Probe sought on who rented P1-M suite in Vegas hotel

HOUSE Minority Leader Francis Escudero Monday called for a congressional investigation into a column item by Inquirer sports columnist Recah Trinidad that a Filipino, reputedly a public figure, rented a $20,000-suite at the MGM Grand hotel to watch the Manny Pacquiao-Erik Morales fight two weeks ago.
(Based on Monday's currency conversion rate of P54.48 to the US dollar, this is equivalent to P1,089,600.)
"This might not be illegal but it is certainly immoral,” Escudero said.
He claimed the investigation would not focus on determining the identity of the public figure but only on strengthening the country's laws against ostentatious display of wealth by public officials.
"This is the source of public upheavals, when you flaunt your wealth in the face of so much suffering by our people,” Escudero said.
"This was bad taste even if the (public figure's) wealth was inherited,” he added.
Escudero said the investigation would not be a witch hunt but he said those who went to Las Vegas, including more than a dozen congressmen and First Gentlemen Jose Miguel Arroyo, might be invited to shed light on the matter.
He said Congress should look into whether or not the country's laws against public officials flaunting their wealth should be strengthened.
He noted that the Code of Ethical Standards for Public Officials calls on government employees to live modest lives while the Civil Code bars ostentatious display of wealth which might cause public unrest.
In his column Bare Eye on March 23, Trinidad said that a Filipino who came to watch the Pacquiao-Morales match rented the $20,000-a-night MGM Grand Villa 1, which has a total floor area of 12,000 square feet.
The suite had its own swimming pool, a front garden, and other amenities.
Trinidad said that the Filipino was not a congressman but was a "heavyweight backer” of Pacquiao. He declined to name the person at the request of his source adding that baring it "would be a political bombshell.”
Abswelto na si PAGCOR chairman. Hindi daw siya yun as per PR head of PAGCOR.
President’s husband, opposition clash over luxury Vegas room

FIRST Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo hit out at the country's political opposition Tuesday for hinting that he had rented a luxury suite in Las Vegas to watch a boxing match.
The allegation was "a hallucination and a falsehood of the highest order," Arroyo's spokesman Jesus Santos said in a statement.
"It could not be him. He's such a cheapskate. He doesn't know how to waste money," Santos told GMA Network's radio station dzBB.
Santos issued the statement after rumors spread that the President's husband was the one being referred to in an Inquirer report as the government man who stayed in the luxury suite.
Arroyo stayed at a "complimentary" room at the MGM Grand Hotel, Santos said, though he declined to reveal the cost.
House of Representatives minority leader Francis Escudero on Monday called for a probe into the allegations floated in the local press by the political opposition that a public figure had rented the hotel room to see popular Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao fight Mexican Erik Morales.
The public figure who allegedly rented the room was not named, but broad hints have been made by the opposition that it was Arroyo's husband.
Escudero conceded that it was not illegal to rent an expensive room, but stressed that it was "immoral" to show extreme extravagance when the Philippines is in the throes of a financial crisis.
Santos challenged "publicity hounds and rumour-mongers" to come up with proof of the presidential husband's involvement.
President Gloria Arroyo's spokesman Ignacio Bunye remarked that "it is difficult to say if this (allegation) is factual. We have to check this out."
Corruption remains rampant in the Philippines, where two graft-stained presidents, Ferdinand Marcos and Joseph Estrada, were ousted by popular revolts in 1986 and 2001, respectively.
Estrada is in detention while being tried for allegedly plundering some 80 million dollars from state coffers. Marcos died in exile in Hawaii in 1989.
liable pa rin sya kahit na di sya nag bayad obviously nagamit ang impluwensiya na as FG dahil binigyan sya ng pinaka magarbong complimentary room sa balat ng pinoy hehehe
He-he-he!
actually hindi lang yung room maski yung pagpunta nila lahat dun to gamble and bet on pakyaw's fight, obviously wasting money is saying something to us left here..
dibale masusunog rin naman sila sa impyerno kahit magconfess sila sa pari... so patas lang...
masyado naman silang nag iinarte... sheesh... $20,000 lang ba? within a few minutes maraming nagpapatalo sa casino ng ganyang halaga...
another one... this is all based on hearsays... and supposed secrecy?
Originally Posted by rbortega1981
well ang pangit lang kasi tingnan to see the 1st gentleman spending P1M (IF his money), ok lng kng hindi president asawa nya kahit 1 year pa sya dun sa suite. hirap na nga pilipinas di pa maka-pakita man lng ng good morals sa mga kababayan.
if mike arroyo and the arroyo family is sincere in helping the filipinos and doing their responsibility, they would not spend such amount even it is from their own pockets. they would consider helping the suffering filipinos first...
