Arroyo: Aug 29 to be non-working holiday

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Saturday ordered Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita to draft an order declaring August 29, Monday, a public holiday in observance of National Heroes' Day.

The President gave the order two days after Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye declared that Monday would be a regular working day because Heroes' Day was normally observed on the last Sunday of August every year under the law.

Ermnita told the reporters that the President called him about the change in holiday plans only at 6 p.m.

I don't think any new holidays have been added in our Philippine calendar for quite some time. They were simply moved to a working day in case the holiday fell on a Saturday or Sunday. The reason behind it was to promote tourism and increase consumer spending to pump up our commerce - an idea that came from then secretary (and now Senator) Richard Gordon.

If you will ask my opinion, I don't think we should declare the February People Power day (the one that toppled Ferdinand Marcos) as a national non-working holiday. Because that incident has political overtones and not exactly something ALL filipinos share.

i don't agree their reason behind- tourism, one day promotion is not enough help instead pagandahin nila un mga tourist spot natin, ayusin ang security ng bansa kc kahit hinde holiday kung talagang worthy un tourist spot natin dadagsain yan ng tao locally and internationally...such a lousy idea of Gordon ...million million na un unemployed sa bansa declare p sila ng declare holiday pati un may mga trabaho nawalan pa ng income and the whole...kawawang pinas

The actual holiday is celebrated on the last sunday of august, moving it to monday is just to please the lazy masses... this is of course my opinion. As for me I dont have work on monday anyway.
