Same in higher speed downhill, pababa ng Baguio halimbawa, kung hindi mo nman kailangang mag-accelerate, just stay in the gear best suited for your speed na hindi ka bubulusok.
same with picard..
the first gear is intact while going downhill like ayala underground parking are.
I still have the grip.![]()
Shifting to a lower gear to use engine braking rather than stepping on the brakes when approaching a red stop light from high speed is also a big no no.
Pag pababa ka kase and bumaba na sa <1 rpm mo and you press the clutch without stepping on the brakes, mas dadausdos ka ng konti kase disconnected na yung engine sa tranny mo, afaik.
Yup, engine braking consumes fuel. I don't really use it on flat ground. Basta kung naka-5th gear ako and coming to a stop, I'll step on the clutch just before my engine bogs. I won't engine brake on 3rd or 4th anymore.

I'm really glad to have read this thread.. like vinsanity I also do the same neutral gear going down fro steep parking areas.... likewise I also felt compelled to shift to a lower gear approaching a full stop. dapat pala kahit naka 5th gear ka hayaan lang mag stop ang car, no need to shift to 4th or 3rd gear....pero okey lang ba talag un cluthch lang ginagalaw during heavy trafic? most often than not un ang nangyayari dito sa area ko dahil usad pagong lagi sa trafic...
requiring you to be on first gear while descending must be for a good reason. i am not sure, but i guess being on first gear makes your speed on descent more controllable: you have engine break, and foot break when needed. no rapid desceleration the moment you release the break from half break or full break.
if you put your gear on neutral while on descent, your descending speed might be irratic and the possibility of you losing control of your car would be higher: hihina pag half-break, hihinto pag full break, gugulong ka naman bigla the moment you release your break (which would not happen kung naka-first gear ka) at dahil nabigla ka, magfull-break ka na naman.
on neutral, you have to descend on half break (timplahan mo ng maayos) throughout your descent on neutral. kaso lang, pagmawala ka sa focus at maiba ang timpla sa break mo, wala kang extra-alalay. either mag-overshoot ka or bigla kang magfull-break.
the tricky part in engaging first gear on descent is the fact that you have to step on the clutch before you step on the break; otherwise, mamatay makina mo.perhaps, this is the reason why you put your gear sa neutral.
