    suzuki-san,

well, AWD (like those in the forester, RAV4, and escape) may still be useful in rain, sand, dirt roads, a little mud, etc...
Kung yun lang naman ang road condition, maski ang ordinary 4X2 or a well-built, locally assembled jeep can also do the job -- mura pa.

Mas stable ang AWD when pushed to the limit sa mga low traction surfaces (ulan, sand, etc.). That's why I go to AWD mode kapag umuulan na.

    ........meee tooo!

Instinct na sakin yun. Basta highway, sabay ulan....4H agad!Thank God for SS4!

Dati, nag lock yung isang wheel nung Pajero ko on a wet road on 2H. Nakakatakot! buti na lang nakarecover ako ng control!

With 4H, pag bitaw mo ng preno, ikot uli wheels.

I tried doing some mud obstacles in the Pajero using AWD mode (high range, C/D unlocked). It still performed way better than in 4x2 mode.

Sa 4x2 stuck na, eh. Sa AWD umandar ulit. Pero sa 4H (C/D locked) at 4L, no sweat na. hehehe.

I prefer using a stick shift for a daily driver, towing, and/or long-range expedition-type of trips. It's economical and very reliable setup.

Off-road? I must admit I like automatics. Humans can't shift as fast as ECU-enhanced machines, clutches get wet in deep water, the gas+brake pedal technique is good on rocks (almost equivalent to crawler gears for manual trannies), and on sand and snow --just put the pedal to the metal!!!

Additionally, I once broke a bone in my right hand. Thank goodness I had a auto tranny then so I was able to drive home in bearable pain. Also, a lot of times I've been deprived of sleep while having too much fun off-road, and having an auto-tranny helped me avoid really bad mistakes.
