I rarely use P, pag nagpapark lang at sobrang haba ng traffic (yung tipong 10 minuto mahigit ang bibilangin).

otherwise, shift to N plus handbrake.

Only use P kung mag papark lang. Sa prolonged stop sa trapik just use N, malaki problema pag bigla may bumangga sa inyo tapos naka P kayo.

sa akin naman..

Madami din pala gumagamit ng rule na stay on D for quick stops or less than 30 sec. Nakakasira daw kasi ng transmission if ginawang parang manual and laging shift from D to N.

Oo naman. "Shifting" is what AT gearboxes do. Shift from N to D with brakes (foot) on, same also from D to N.

By a long stretch, masisira lang dyan shift lever bushings ........... which costs peanuts to replace.

I learned to drive on an MT so I caught the habit of shifting to N then handbrake when stopped. I also press the foot brake every time I move the shift lever. I only use P when I have to shut off the engine.

Some new cars are equipped with brake stop system that shuts engine off when vehicle speed is around zero and the PCM recognizes brake request through the switch and restarts the engine once the brakes are released.

You mean the 30 sec rule of keeping it in D when not moving is more harmful? Or okay lang din? It has been my habit for more than a decade. No prob naman w my transmission so far. Need good advice especially now that i'll be making a new purchase.

Half a minute is not a long time. Maybe you're doing it right, since your car is a decade old na. Maybe your tranny will survive for another decade is you shift to N on all stops, short or otherwise. I have old "matic" Benzes, (1977 and 1988), gearboxes are still at the peak of health up to today. I shift to N on all stops, short or otherwise. Matic gearboxes operate on oil pressure, when there's oil pressure, there's shifting of gears, when there's shifting of gears, there's forward movement (or reverse).

On D with the foot brake on, there's no forward movement, but there's pressure, together with that is heat. If you look closely below your radiator, there's an oil line from the tranny going into the bottom header tank and back again to the tranny. That's a cooling line for ATF.

Pressure and heat are bad for tranny seals, rings, clutches etc. The more you keep your tranny cool and less stressed, the longer it will last you. Of course taking into account periodic ATF flush and replacement.

Kaya nga May neutral,para disengage ang gear,sa a/t pag naka d ka as lsb is saying nape pressure tyranny ,same with manual pag naka engage ang gear at stop,ang tendency is to press on the break(foot) at the same time naka press di sa clutch pedal,which is a no no to m/t tranny.

I used to shift back to N all time when I first drove an AT until a friend of mine, whose a car enthusiast but not really an expert told me abt the harm it can do. Since there were no written rules abt it, I just followed his advice. Wasn't aware that I was already doing the right thing before. Oh well, never too late to go back to the old habit.
