i posted this problem sa nissan section then boybi told me to put a new thread here baka some of you transmission gurus can help me. here is the scenario:

trying to get the patrol up the curb/sidewalk kelangan may bwelo. if its at a standstill (i.e. nakadikit yng car sa curb , neutral, then engage the drive, car wont get up the curb. no reving sound whatsover pa. it just stands there. todo tapak na ,floored. so if its up a hill, kapag steep incline de talaga gagalaw. ok naman siya sa highway no problem.

brought it to the casa(nissan pasong tamo) several times they said nothing was wrong then i told them to try going up the sidewalk ...yun only thing they said was "ah onga no may mali nga dito". after checking they told be torque converter daw. they are still doing tests cuz first time lang daw sila nakakita nito. the mechanic hinted a new one would cost 77k WOW.

So what are my possible solutions here? kaya pa ba i salvage? buy a new one? surplus? where can i source? how much damage?

how did this torque coverter get busted in the first place? poor maintenance (casa maintained ever since)? over use?

    THANKS!

I won't look at the torque converter muna. Try flooring the accelerator from a standstill and see if it still takes off normally (read:like a rabbit). If it does your torque converter is still good. Drive by wire yan meaning no accelerator cable and the variations in RPM depends on a variable resistor wiper arm controlled by your pedal.

owwww ive read about that! possible din daw baka yun. thought it was cruise control pero no throttle cable na nga pala yung patrols now just that drive by thingy. so it may be electrical problems? i'll have them check for that din. i'l try to see if it takes off normally. the car's still in the casa e. they're trying to swap the torque covnverter with a new one to see if the problem goes away.

also, try replacing the atf muna imo. it might be dirty. also check the atf drain plug and see kung marami metal bits stuck to it.

"if you want to check it yourself try this: with your left foot on the brake (press hard), set parking brake, put gear in drive (press the brake harder to prevent veh movement) then with your right foot press the accelerator hard and look at the engine rpm if if doesnt go beyond 1800 to 2200 rpm then the torque conv is still good. one more thing a failed (stuck) torque converter will stall the engine." (from thread http://tsikot.yehey.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40409)

i tried this with my patrol bec im suspecting that i have a busted torque converter. upon hitting the gas ,the needle stays below 1000 hovering in the 900 range doesnt go beyond this. is this a busted torque converter?

It's strange... actually. I've never heard of something like this.

Does it strain at these rpms? When the engine is pushing against the torque converter, you can feel it straining. If you can't feel any power going through the engine, then it's definitely not a busted torque converter. Slap that idiot on the back of the head and tell him to hook the freaking car up to a diagnostics machine.

It may be some fault mode in the computer... maybe a safety mode that prevents you from destroying the torque converter by effectively keeping you from torque-braking.

How did they know that it was a torque converter is the problem? Not even a very good technician could point out the culprit untill that tranny brought down to the table to look at it internally. Stay away in that area.

How about checking your tranny fluid. Low and overfill trans. fluid can cause too many problem. Check the tranny fluid level. Tranny must be warm not hot (boiled) when checking. To do this, engine is in idle and your tranny engage to drive(D) have somebody in the driver seat to this while your checking the level. If it is low add up into a proper level. On any case, do not overfill the tranny it could could cause more damage than low level. Hope this help. Oooops! One more thing, you might have to change also the filter(recomended) check also for leak around tranny pan.

thanks for all the input! how do i go about this? buy a new one from the casa? surplus? where can i source? meron ba aftermarket torque converters? cuz i read that people upgrade their torque converters so malamang there are aftermarket parts.

I don't know if you can get an aftermarket.

If you rely on Nissan, there's a waiting period. Some good shops can order for you from overseas.

And yes, it'll still be expensive... but at least you won't pay Nissan's insane markup. I was hoping it would be electronics... sorry to hear this, bro. Wala bang warranty dun? Or is it past warranty na?

wala eh we tried everything. it's the torque converter talaga. sadly, the warranty expired na...sabi 3 years lang daw. bought it nung 2003 pa.

niky- that is exactly what im looking for. a shop that can order abroad for me. i know it'll be expensive pero based from experience i think wala parin tatalo sa markup ng CASA and that anything is better than ordering from CASa directly ( siguro last resort na talaga sila). san kaya pwede? i understand mahirap daw kabitin tong torque converter bec it involves the transmission and there are alot of pressure things to seal.

Try Autotechnika in the Fort... they specialize in high end cars and trucks, and have experience ordering abroad. It's more expensive than some shops, but their ethos is to provide "casa-level" service.

My personal choice is Speedlab. They also do major work like overhauls and transmission overhauls, but I don't know how familiar they are with suppliers for the Patrol.

Most any good shop in the city should be able to order for you. You can also check at 4x4ph.com and find out what shops those guys go to... as they might be able to point you to guys with Patrol parts and (hopefully) a cheap source of transmissions.
