Is this your first vehicle with an automatic transmission? This is 100% normal.
"Automatic" doesn't mean "intelligent" - without driver input, the transmission will just use the highest gear it can because it is "programmed" that way.
Every notch on your shift lever is a program.
This is why you have a shift lever you can put into 2 or L.
If you leave the lever in D, it will use all the available forward gears and it will NEVER engine-brake for you.
Shifting to 2 programs the transmission to use only first and second gear, nothing higher.
Shifting to L programs the transmission to use first gear and nothing else.
Moving the lever from D to 2 will give you engine braking that will be enough for most situations.
