hindi talaga siya magda-downshift. normal yang nangyayari sa kotse mo.

pag palusong, lagay mo kambiyo sa D3 or D2 para hindi maubos preno mo.

yup, di yan magda-down shift automatically. you need to shift to L2 or L3. kahit sa mga tiptronic na A/T need mag-manual mode at gamitin yung +/- para mag-down shift.

never rely on your brakes alone. always use low gear, especially pag long downhill drive.

Is this your first vehicle with an automatic transmission? This is 100% normal.

"Automatic" doesn't mean "intelligent" - without driver input, the transmission will just use the highest gear it can because it is "programmed" that way.

Every notch on your shift lever is a program.
This is why you have a shift lever you can put into 2 or L.
If you leave the lever in D, it will use all the available forward gears and it will NEVER engine-brake for you.
Shifting to 2 programs the transmission to use only first and second gear, nothing higher.
Shifting to L programs the transmission to use first gear and nothing else.

Moving the lever from D to 2 will give you engine braking that will be enough for most situations.

It all depends on how your ECU adjusted to your driving style. It's normal for a car to hold its gear even on downhill slopes if it feels that's the best match for your driving style. It's also possible that it's not in the algorithm of the ECU to even consider downshifting for engine braking.

In my experience with our Altis, it downshifts when I'm on a downhill slope and I give the brake pedal a slight trod as long as I'm between 60-100 kph.

    Not true for all cars.

Specifically on the Honda 5A/T (found on the 8th & 9th Gen Civic and 2nd Gen Jazz):
    1. It will downshift under certain conditions - ie. when it senses the car speeding up with the brakes applied like when rolling downhill. Honda calls this "Grade Logic". Models with the cruise control set makes use of this feature to prevent overspeeding on long downhill roads.
    2. When "2" is selected, it is locked on 2nd gear. It doesn't shift up or down. Typically used when accelerating on very slippery surfaces to prevent wheel spin.

For you to "downshift" to D3 or D2 or L, you need to be within a certain maximum speed for each case. Consult your vehicle manual on this.

going back to the prev question earlier, lets say patag ang road so naka "D" ka.. then nakita mo biglang pababa na... medyo matarik and you need to have engine break para hindi ma pwersa so brakes, do you have to make a full stop before you change "D" to "L" or "S" using a Honda Jazz or any CVT vehicle or pwede ba na from "D" while moving eh change gears to "L" or "S"? - thanks!

ok lang kahit umaandar provided na hindi ka lalampas sa max speed ng gear na lilipatan mo, check your car's manual regarding the max speed for each gear.

Shifting from D to S and vice versa is ok at any speed. However, when shifting to L or any fixed gear, your speed should be within the range of that gear (this info is in the manual) or you might over-rev your engine. Although, most modern electronically-controlled transmissions may be programmed to not engage a certain gear if it's out of its operational range, even if the shift lever is set to that gear. But then, not all cars are engineered the same way.

That said, it's still best to treat it with respect, much like how you would handle an unloaded gun... always treat it like it is loaded. The A/T is probably one of the most expensive and most fragile powertrain component in your car.
