    Hello...

I'm old school. I've been a stick shift guy my entire life. But most of the cars/SUVs coming out now are either automatic or using "tiptronic" or triptronic transmission?

I really would prefer to buy a manual brand new vehicle... but with the changing times, I guess I have to be flexible.

I hate automatics...I simply will not buy one. I would rather buy a 2nd hand manual tha buy a brand new automatic. I don't really care about traffic. I'd still prefer stick shift.

But this tiptronic transmission technology is intriguing me. So, my question is: How close is the tiptronic transmission in replicating the feeling of a stick shift transmission? i.e. can you actually have control of the engine similar to manual shifting? Is it more automatic than manual? etc.

I was so sad to find out that the Maza 3 and 6 only come in tiptronic. But if this technology turns out to be similar in feel to having a stick shift, then I may opt to buy a car/SUV with this technology.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thank you.

Tiptronic (or manumatic or INVECS, Tapshift, or whatever marketing term they use) IS an automatic transmission WITH manual controls. That is still an A/T underneath your car with oil pump, torque converter, etc.

Ferrari is one of the few that actually use a paddle-controlled manual transmission.

So how does it compare to an Manual Tranny in terms of Fuel Efficiency?

AFAIK not that much difference in fuel efficiency between tiptronic (+/-) and A/T

BlueBimmer is correct the closest to an M/T without a clutch pedal is an SMG.

the new ones with CVT trannies are very efficient, like the new lancer (invecs III) and honda city. CVT trannies are almost as efficient as manual trannies because the power transfer is by a steel belt, unlike hydraulic torque converter A/Ts where there are hydraulic losses. i have a '02 lancer with invecs II (hydraulic), ok naman siya if you put it in manual mode. won't shift up, but it will automatically shift down when you stop.

fuel mileage? my best so far was 17.5 km/liter hiway (manila-baguio-manila). worst was 6 km/l heavy traffic city driving. but it will really depend on how you drive, like if you go fast then use the brakes a lot then definitely even if you have a manual tranny the mileage will be low.

pareho tayo noong una...ayaw ko ng matic until nasubukan ko activematic ng mazda...luxury ng a/t kapag relax mode at benefit ng m/t kapag kailangang mag overtake or spirited driving....

siyempre ibang iba pa rin ang hatak ng m/t kapag nag down shift compared with activematic or tiptronic...

para sa fuel economy ng activematic 1.6 at 2.0 pwede mong bisitahin itong link
    mazda 3 fuel consumption

The only problem with most tiptronic tranmissions is that you don't have full control over when and where you can shift gears up or down, the computer still has final say. The Ferrari and BMW SMG transmissions are essentially manual transmissions with an automatic feature. The tiptronic in, my Mazda3 for instance, is an automatic with a manual shift mode.

Toyota also offers its sequential manual transmission on its MR2 Spyder but until Toyota offers its SMT here in the Philippines, we ordinary folks just have to make do with our manumatics. Only in my dreams can I own a Ferrari.

Here's a pic of the VW Passat tiptronic:

On the right side is the tiptronic (+/-) where u can manually shift thru the gears without the clutch.

smg and the ferrari paddle system are true 'manuals w/o the clutch'. think of it as a stick shift with the computer pressing the clutch and shifting the gear for you in a split second

the "tiptronics", as Otep said, are automatics with an option to shift the gears yourself. my bmw has one of these and imo, it feels just like an automatic when you shift - the only advantage is that you can hold the car in a certain gear for longer (the software will still override it if you over-rev, though)

tiptronic btw is a brand name for porsche/audi's transmissions. you'll hear things like steptronic (bmw) and activematic (mazda) - those are all the same thing

bottom line: a tiptronic and all of its kind still use a torque converter.

torque converter = loss of power

i have a lancer 04 mx, its got invecs III, semi-auto;tiptronic;(or kung ano man tawag ) when you over - rev it hindi naman sya automatically shift up gear, maybe it comes with the programming of the computer... it think kaya naman sya i-program to your driving desire/habit. ok naman din sya pang overtake... i tried automatic revos and GMC's (parang suburban), to compare mas maganda tiptronic pang overtake...more control...

sir,pag invecs 3 yan..CVT yan...di mo mararamdaman gear change nyan in auto mode...belts and pulleys lang yan...unlike invecs 1 and 2.. and yung "6-speed mode" are preprogrammed virtual gears...

it is shifting, but you cant feel it...

you are right - depende sa programming ng computer. some trannies even have two modes, normal and sport. in sport mode it will not upshift and hold the gear (although the rev limiter will still work).
