It's ok if you're just running * 20kph or less but on the faster speed you got to take advantage of the "engine brake" by stepping on the brake pedal first, clutch second and gear down(assuming if you're not yet down at first gear). This can give you more control and manueverability specially on a slippery road and extend the wear and tear of your brake pads and clutch lining.
