    hi all,

tranny here means transmission right? and not transvestite? LOL!!

seriously now, hehe sorry, couldnt help it...., I have seen lots of posts stating "check your tranny" (for AT models)...and i would like to do that...

assuming i bring it to a shop, what are the things they normally check for in the tranny?

i think i have problems with my 1994 AT civic, (mileage is 85k) since i dont recall any maintenance being done on it in years....

    thanks!

ATF is normally pinkish or red in color. If it smells burnt, replace it asap with the correct type of fluid. ATF is usually replaced every 2 years or 40,000 kms. Some people change at 20,000 kms. Check your manual as your cars replacement interval may be different.

Things that you should NEVER do on an AT:
    1. Glide or rolling on neutral - can cause damage to the transmission.
    2. Shift from P or N to any gear without steping on the brake. This can cause the car to jump/jerk and hit something.
    3. Push start the car. This will not work you need to jump start.
    4. Drive without ATF unless you want to buy a new tranny. Hey I have personally seen this with a brand new Navigator, factory did not put fluid.
I'm sure there are others just can't think of them right now.

Things you should and can do to to an AT:
    1. Drive smoothly and treat the accelerator pedal like its an egg that you don't want to squash. This will help improve your fuel consumption.
    2. No. 1 can also make your car shift at lower rpms.
    3. Drive with OD on to save on gas. Think of the OD as a 4th or 5th gear.
    4. If you have economy or winter mode use it to save on fuel as you will up shift earlier.
    5. When climbing hills, you can turn off OD or downshift for more power.
    6. Downshifting can be done by moving the lever from D to 3 or by flooring the gas pedal.
    7. When going downhill, you can engine brake by turning of OD and downshifting.
    8. You can make your AT upshift by letting go of the accelerator pedal for a few seconds. This is easier done if you know what RPM it normally shifts.

"Tranny"? Di ba ito yung asawa ni Lolo?

One of the problems here, kahit sa Banawe, bibihira yung marunong talaga sa AT. Yung iba nga, di alam kung ano ibig sabihin ng shift solenoid or TCM, kung ano-ano pang sinasabi. Ang sarap bigwasan....

Most gasoline service stations can only change ATF, tapos drain hole lang yung tatanggalin. They dont even dismantle the pan.

A transmission has no 'lifespan'. Just maintain it properly following manufacturer (not dealer) recommended maintenance procedures written in your owner's manual.

The dealer's maintenance recommendations sometimes call for uneeded work (to generate themselves extra income).

Ano bang difference ng power mode at OD off sa pajero field master? Sabi kasi sa manual use when you need extra power for overtaking and goin uphill. So for example paakyat ako baguio dapat ba sabay sila o isa lang at alin sa kanila ang isi switch?

the function of the overdrive (OD) button have been discussed extensively here in tsikot, please do a search.

the power mode simply instructs the transmission to upshift at a higher rpm, which gives the car more power when overtaking.

when going up baguio, putting your shifter at position D is enough.
