(UPDATE) EXPECT more private vehicles on the metro's roads on Monday as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) would give number-coding a day off in the face of the scheduled nationwide transport strike.
"We've decided to lift coding on Monday so that we could somehow help the commuters. They are our primary concern," said MMDA deputy chairman Cesar Lacuna in a phone interview Sunday.
MMDA officials made the decision to suspend the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) on Sunday, as a transport group signified its intent to push through with the transport strike throughout the first workday of the week.
The strike is to be held to protest oil price increases and to press for the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The number-coding scheme bans vehicles from Metro Manila's streets on weekdays based on the last digit of vehicle license plates.
