    Vanity plates fetch disappointing P3.6M
    By Rainier Allan Ronda
    The Philippine Star 10/01/2004

An auction held by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for limited edition vanity plates last Wednesday drew disappointing results with only 44 of the first batch of 55 plates sold and a mere P3.699 million raised.

LTO director Assistant Secretary Anneli Lontoc still described the auction "a success," considering it was the first time such a public sale was held in the country.

As expected, the vanity plates with six 8’s and five 8’s fetched the highest price with the former sold for P385,000 to a buyer identified as Rafael Garcia III and the latter sold for P350,000 to an unidentified buyer.

Thirteen of the vanity plates were sold at the opening bid price of P50,000.

Former Quezon City councilor Bong Suntay was reported to have brought the most number of vanity plates, buying a total of eight. He later told reporters he had bought some of the plates for his friends.

People from international auctioneer Henry Butcher, which conducted the auction for the LTO pro bono, admitted being a little disappointed with the auction results.

"It could have been better if we had auctioned fewer plates, one Henry Butcher staffer noted.

Other Henry Butcher people commented that due to the big number of plates auctioned, "buyer’s fatigue" may have hit the buyers.

Meanwhile, Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay criticized the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for exempting owners of the LTO special plates from the number-coding scheme.

Binay said the decision of MMDA Chairman Bayani Fernando to exempt vehicles with vanity plates would only aggravate the traffic situation in the metropolis.

"The LTO and the MMDA are sending the wrong signals that you can buy your way out of anything," Binay said.

He also branded the exemption as "scandalous" since it gives the impression that the government provides special privileges to the rich.

Some 105 vanity plates would be auctioned to generate additional income for the national government. — With Evelyn Macairan

Why don't they just sell as many plates as they can and let the people choose what letters will be on those plates just like what is done in most U.S. states. I guess this will result in more revenue and happier customers.

And what's with the policy of having to display it side by side with your standard license plate? Ilan ba ang lalagyan ng plaka ng sasakyan sa harap? Hindi ba isa lang? Stupid government

I think the next step is for people to choose their 6 alphanumeric combination for a price. Those auctioned were the special combinations.

I might have to agree with Binay though about the number coding exemption thing, the law favoring the rich and all.

for sure, after selling all those plates,
malamang ipagbabawal ulit ng MMDA at PNP ang paggamit ng vanity plates just like those commemorative plates before.

i was planning to buy a vanity plate (yung ordinary lang, not the auctioned ones), but when i read in the papers na dapat side by side ang vanity plate with the regular issued plate at huhulihin daw ng MMDA kung vanity lang ang nakakabit, hwag nalang. kaya nga nag vanity plates para yun ang nakakabit. kung side by side lang pwede naman ako magpasadya ng plate na gusto ko at mas mura pa ng dihamak!

    Side by side?!

Parang mahirap yata pagkasyahin magkatabi yung 2 plates. O kaya naman nasa likod yung orig LTO plates?
