SAYING that the number-coding scheme of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority was ineffective in easing traffic, Mayor Vicente Eusebio has suspended its implementation in Pasig City.

The suspension took effect about two weeks ago, city traffic management office head police Superintendent Virgilio Fulache told the Inquirer.

Under the number scheme, vehicles are barred from the streets on certain days depending on the last number of their license plates. For instance, those ending with numbers 1 and 2 are not allowed on Metro Manila roads on Mondays.

The scheme aims to ease traffic on key roads by limiting the volume of vehicles.

In his memorandum to the traffic management office, Eusebio said the suspension of the number scheme was for "the interest of the public."

"The mayor does not believe in the scheme. He thinks the scheme is not the solution to the traffic problem," public information chief Oliver Mendoza said.

Fulache said the suspension had not yet affected traffic in Pasig City because only a few people had known about it.

But he said the traffic volume could suddenly increase with the publication of the suspension.

Some motorists expressed apprehension over the effect of Eusebio's move on traffic, especially along the busy roads.

Fulache also quickly cautioned motorists that while the scheme had been indefinitely suspended in the city, the scheme was still being implemented in most local government units in the metropolis.

    What is his solution then?

He should at least have an alternative plan first before suspending the coding scheme.

buti sana kung yung mga tao na nasa-pasig eh taga-pasig .. wala ngang coding sa pasig .. pero di ka naman maka-punta doon dahil dadaan ka muna sa ibang lugar .. and vice versa .. di ka naman makalabas ng pasig dahil coding na .. so i guess this will only benefit those who live and work in pasig at the same time .. but it won't solve the traffic ..
