Overtaking and the use of rear view mirror?

Noob question guys regarding the use of rear view mirror.

Aside from backing, where and what's specifically the use of it?

Nung nag aral ako sa driving school, ang sabi ni instructor is, it is use pag nag overtake ka, you need to look at it instead of the right side mirror to make sure na malayo ka sa na overtakan mong sasakyan bago ka bumalik sa right lane. Though for me, mas sanay ako tumingin sa right side mirror instead of the rear view mirrow before ako bumalik sa right lane.

Is it a bad driving habit?

Use whatever you're comfortable with as long as you are able to gain complete situation awareness when you're going to overtake.

it is defensive driving. it is safer than using your side mirror.

The rear view mirror gives you a general view of what's behind you ---

( a little of left)( back )( a little of right).

While the side view mirror shows more of left or right, depending on what mirror you look at.

Use your rear mirror first to get a general awareness of what's behind.
Then switch to the appropriate side view mirror if needed.

Actually, it's kind of hard to explain this in words because you'll eventually develop the skill of using rear and side view mirrors as your experience in driving grows.

pwede din namn gamitin ang right side mirror if gusto mo ng bumalik sa lane pag kagaling sa overtake, just make sure na yung image ng buong car na na-overtake mo e nasa loob ng salamin ng side mirror.....

Napaisip tuloy ako kung anu nga ba ang aking SOP sa pag overtake hehehe.

Usually side mirror ang tinitingnan ko pero pag sa expressway kung saan mabibilis ang sasakyan, tumitingin din ako sa rear view mirror para lang makita kung may sasakyan from afar na mabilis ang approach.

Then balik sa side mirror to confirm kung open for overtaking at kung lagpas na.

Pero palagay ko nga mas safe kung rear view mirror gagamitin to confirm na lusot ka na sa pag overtake.

Sabi nga you should be able to see the vehicles you are trying to pass on your rear view mirror as a sign na clear ka na bumalik sa lane.

Tignan mo lahat. Bawat mirror ay may kanya kanyang blind spot and limitations kaya nilagyan ng left, rear, and right view mirrors. Matagal na nga ang 1 second lalo na kung nasa highway ka. Ugaliin mo na aware ka sa surroundings mo at any given driving moment.

alam ko sa california ganyan kasi nasabihan ako ng DMV officer nung kumuha ako ng driver's license, need talaga lumingon before changing lanes kundi bagsak ka.

sa saudi naman baliktad. when backing up/reverse di ka pwede lumingon sa likod, side mirror and rear view mirror lang. pag tumingin ka sa likod automatic bagsak ka na.

Bros.,- sa DMV,- signal, glance and immediately change lane.. Hindi puwedeng more than 5 sec na naka-signal ka at libre e hindi ka mag lane change.... Bagsak kang bata ka...

Saudi,- mas bilib ako sa parallel parking... Full turn right-reverse then stop then full turn left-reverse-stop-align wheels with body - pasok sa assigned parking lane at nasa gitna ka pa... No more need to go forward and back to align your parking.... Ayos!!!

I do glance too, if you are on a 3 lane road, you are on lane 1 and moving to lane 2, hindi kita sa mirror kung meron sa lane 3 na a change lane din to lane 2. That's where the quick glance helps

Hindi ko rin gets yung driver na lumilingon sa likod with matching akbay sa passenger seat while backing / paatras na parking.

Side / rear view mirrors lang gamit ko.

Siyempre pagbalik ng naka-akbay na braso,- may kurot sa pisngi ng katabing pasahero,- at pagpalit ng kambyo from reverse to 1st gear,- may haplos sa braso, kamay at sa....

Sa driving school naman the instructor was insistent na dapat lingon-sa-likod-with-akbay-sa-passenger-seat pag nagrereverse. Pero hindi rin ako nasanay, usually one glance back lang just to make sure of the distance.

Pag lingon sa likod with akbay pa, tapos matagal, nagiging blind spot mo yung kaliwa ng sasakyan. Oo nga bago ka lumingon nakita mo naman clear yung kaliwa ng sasakyan. Pero ugali ng tao walang pake sa nagpapark na sasakyan. Didikit at didikit yan sa sasakyan mo, minsan makikipag patintero pa sa yo.
