Motorists using the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) could save around 13 percent worth of gas and maintenance costs yearly, a University of the Philippines study commissioned by Manila North Tollways Corp. (MNTC) said Friday.

Prof. Norman Ramos of the UP Development Foundation, which undertook the study, said during the weekly Remdrandt Forum that this was based on the computations of running and maintenance cost of vehicles traversing the NLE.

“The study shows that motorist could gain savings in maintenance cost by using NLEX because their vehicles are less likely to suffer damages along the highway,” he said.

Ramos said the findings covered all types of vehicles.

Less damages mean low maintenance cost, he noted.

He said the study, which was done from November 2003 to April 2004, utilized the historical traffic volume of the old NLEX and the new tollway.

Ramos said motorists could also incur savings in running costs of their vehicles.

“Running costs cover the gasoline and brake fluid intake of a vehicle. With the newly completed highway, motorists are less likely spend much gas in completing their travel,” he said.

The savings, he said, are aside from the socio-economic activities that would be generated by the new NLEX for cities and provinces that have access to the modern highway.

“A good highway translates to faster transport of commodities, thus generating better economic activity,” Ramos stressed.

He stressed the study was done scientifically despite being commissioned by the MNTC. --

Yun savings napunta lang sa toll fee...

ok na sana kaya lang nasira bigla sa huli... commissioned pala by MNTC.

pero in fairness, makakatipid ka naman talga, but is it enough to offset the additional cost you have to pay for the improve services?

Mas matipid kung bawasan nila yung flat rate nila. Imagine almost 7 km lang P42 na! Anak ng Teteng!

May kumakalat na flyers ngayon that indicates kung mag-kano talaga yung proposed flat rate. Nakita kong hawak kagabi nung isang gentleman. It said that the P 42 should actually be just P 14.

14 pesos + mun. taxes+vat+evat+interests(loan/business/personal)=42 pesos...

just thinking..not an actual computation

san nga pal makakakuha nung flyers?

before MNTC took over, i'm averaging 6-6.5km/li. nagpapa full tank when i leave my place and then another full tank when i arrive. last week, naka register ako ng 7.3km/li. yesterday, naka 7km/li ako. pero na-traffic ako sa edsa going to makati ng lunch time.

i average around 280kms round trip.

P24.73 ang diesel dito sa amin.

sa 6km/li, i consume 46.66liters = P1,154.90
6.5km/li = 43.08li = P1,065.37
7.3km/li = 38.36li = P948.64
7.0km/li = 40.00li = P989.20

so with the new NLEX, i save from P76.17 to P205.26 per trip on my fuel.

also, from the toll plaza in Dau until the toll plaza in Bocaue, halos hindi na ako umapak ng brakes. savings din ito sa brakes pads and rotors.

sama pa natin yung less wear and tear sa tires, sa suspension parts, etc.

hindi natin makikita agad ang savings because of the new NLEX. maybe after a year or two, mapapansin nyo nalang at magtataka kayo, na bihira nalang masira ang car nyo.

mahirap talaga lunukin yung bagong toll rates hehe... but i think medyo justified naman considering the quality of the tollway now

some people just look at it in a bad way, if you think harder, you are saving more time for yourself and your family.

yung time component ang pinaka mahirap i quantify...

for the executives, big bosses, successful entrepreneurs (who already can afford the increase) eh mas ma appreciate ito since mas bibilis nga ang byahe... pero yung mga common tao na mahihirap, na sa ordinary days nila prior to the increase eh talagang idle na ang oras nila at sila pa ang hindi makaka afford, eh natural talagang hindi nila ma appreciate ito!!

but i looked at it also this way: an uncle of mine was telling me this story na to get stocks from our warehouse in pulilan, they'll be coming from kalookan via mcarthur (kasi nga mahal na ang NLEX)... it took them 4 hours just to get from their office upto our warehouse via macarthur... another 2 - 3 hours loading stocks in our warehouse.. and another 4 hours travelling back from our warehouse in pulilan back to their office in kalookan... with a value of about 600,000 worth of goods in that truck/trip... tinitipid nila eh about 500 bucks of expenses (which is only 0.008% of the value of the goods loaded) on toll gate fees when in fact they spent out a day's salary for a driver and 2 helpers (about 1,000) worth of salaries for nothing! (pickup ng stock and back to office, wala naman na generate na revenue for them!)

kung dumaan na lang sila ng NLEX (oopps.. i'm not being paid to advertise for NLEX and MNTC ah) and paid the fees, they could've delivered the items within the same day to their clients and magbibilang na agad sila ng terms para masingil ang customer, instead of the stocks na matulog sa kamay nila...

it's not all that bad i think...

hehe, mahirap kasi i-quantify yung savings in time and wear and tear, whereas yung three-digit toll fee parang sumabog na granada sa bulsa
