My colleague shared this with me today.

ABS-CBN Video: New license plate format addresses security issues - YouTube

LTO bares format of new license plates

MANILA, Philippines - The Land Transportation Office (LTO) plans to make new license plates for vehicles which will be issued to new vehicles by 2013.

It also plans to standardize the license plate design of all motor vehicles in the country.

Since 1981, license plates for vehicles have had nine designs. Through its standardization program, the LTO aims to reduce the number of fake license plates.

The new design will have a new font and a barcode, which will contain information about the vehicle and its owner.

The new license plates will be able to inform authorities where the vehicle was registered.

It also features a one-way screw so that if someone tries to remove the license plate, it will be damaged and cannot be used again.

Effective 2013, new vehicles purchased will have license plates that have four numbers.

License plates for public vehicles, meanwhile, will indicate the vehicle's route to solve the so-called "colorum" problem.

Motorcycles will also have new license plates which will be bigger and should be placed at the front and rear end of the motorcycles. The new plates will also have five numeric digits instead of four.

The LTO will conduct a public bidding for the new license plates. It plans to implement the project by January next year. - ANC

"It also features a one-way screw so that if someone tries to remove the license plate, it will be damaged and cannot be used again."

"License plates for public vehicles, meanwhile, will indicate the vehicle's route to solve the so-called "colorum" problem."

About the one way screw, I doubt each traffic enforcer would scrutinize the plate number screw, sa kotong cops favorable to sabihin nila "Aha! hindi one way screw gamit mo huli ka!"

Yeah I doubt the one way screw din.

Ako personally supportive of this project and all the cited objectives.

the other day LTO Las Pinas:

    Change of Venue fee: 100.00
    Cost of Sticker: 50.00
    Duplicate Plates: 450.00
    Legal Research Fund: 10.00
    MVUC: 3,500.00
    Penalty: 200.00
    Computer Fee: 169.06

    Total: 4,579.06

Replacement plates daw will be released after 45 working days (so mga end of April na ito to be sure).
I am planning to use Allen screws on the new plates instead of the LTO supplied screws.

I believe this is to address the shortage of plates. Also nothing is final yet as far as I know, I have a new car bought August 2012 still have no plates but already has plate number in ORCR.

Everything has to start with square one, process improves as it goes.

    For this AAA 1234 format - the number of cars 26^3 * 10^4 = 175,760,000 vehicles

From a very reliable source, nothing is final yet, and definitely this won't be implemented this coming January.

Though I'd imagine they force all of us to get new plates upon renewal of registration.

It walang delay sa bidding at implementation baka as early as Nov stop na sila sa paglabas ng old plates.
