MMDA rolls out Mobile Metrobase

To further enhance its extensive traffic monitoring systems, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) today rolled out its Mobile Metrobase, a mobile command and communications van capable of reaching far-flung areas in Metro Manila and providing real-time traffic surveillance footages.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the Mobile Metrobase will enable the agency's Command Center in Guadalupe, Makati City to monitor blind spots, or areas where the MMDA has no active closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs).

For the Holy Week exodus, the van will be deployed at Metro Manila exit points to monitor traffic to provinces.

"This is a high-tech, highly mobile command and communications center that can be deployed anywhere, 24/7 for traffic and disaster monitoring operations. This will be our eyes and ears to areas our CCTVs and personnel cannot immediately reach," Tolentino said.

Using a converted Hyundai Starex van, the Mobile Metrobase is equipped with four CCTV monitors and a high-resolution camera at its roof. It can record and relay video footages through Wifi, to the MMDA Command Center in Makati City.

The surveillance van has three highly-trained technician-operators directly in communication with the main command center and the Flood Control Information Center (FCIC). It has its own portable power generator for emergency purposes.

The mobile command unit has a range of seven kilometers from the nearest MMDA base station, effectively extending the reach of the MMDA's 55 CCTVs currently in operation.

Tolentino said the Mobile Metrobase will be useful not only in traffic monitoring but also for emergency and security surveillance operations, especially during mass demonstrations such as transport strikes.

"The Mobile Metrobase will serve as our active to link to remote locations in the metropolis, making it easier to provide assistance and service to the public," the MMDA chief said.
