THE METROPOLITAN Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Sunday announced the two-week suspension of the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program (UVVRP) effective Monday until Jan. 1, 2006.
The UVVRP, more popularly known as the number coding scheme, has reduced traffic volume in the metropolis by at least 20 percent on weekdays, by barring vehicles from the road on certain days and at certain hours, based on the last digit of their license plates.
Whether the suspension would ease up or worsen traffic would only be seen upon on-site observation in the next few days, said MMDA Traffic Operations Director (TOC) Executive Director Angelito Vergel de Dios.
However, the suspension will not be carried out in Makati as the city government would continue to enforce its locally legislated number coding scheme.
Joey Salgado, Makati¹s Information and Community Relations Department, said the city would only suspend the traffic scheme on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.
